Tragic Loss: Boston Singer Tommy DeCarlo Dies at 60 After Cancer Battle

Tommy DeCarlo, the esteemed lead vocalist for the iconic rock band Boston, passed away on Monday, March 9, at the age of 60 in Charlotte, North Carolina. His family confirmed his death via a Facebook post, revealing he had been diagnosed with brain cancer last September and had fought "with incredible strength and courage right up until the very end."

Born on April 23, 1965, in Utica, New York, DeCarlo's lifelong connection to Boston began at an early age. He discovered the band and became a devoted fan in 1977 when he was just 12 years old. Boston's groundbreaking debut album, "Boston," released by Epic in 1976, quickly rose to No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and maintained its presence on the chart for an impressive 138 weeks. The band continued their remarkable success with their subsequent albums, "Don’t Look Back" (1978), also on Epic, and "Third Stage" (1986), released on MCA, both of which reached the coveted No. 1 spot.

DeCarlo's personal musical journey intertwined with Boston's legacy in the 1990s when he began recording cover versions of his favorite Boston songs. A significant turning point arrived in March 2007 with the passing of Boston's original lead singer, Brad Delp, who died by suicide at 55. In tribute, DeCarlo wrote and recorded an original song about Delp, in addition to several Boston covers. Following his daughter's suggestion, he posted these recordings on a MySpace page and subsequently sent a link to Boston's management. This led to a direct invitation from Boston's founding member, Tom Scholz, to audition for the band.

DeCarlo's audition was successful, cementing his role as the lead or co-lead vocalist for every subsequent touring lineup of Boston. His vocal talents were also featured on Boston’s 2013 album, "Life Love & Hope," which achieved No. 37 on the Billboard 200. On this album, DeCarlo sang lead vocals on notable tracks including the title song, “Someday,” “You Gave Up on Love (2.0),” and “The Way You Look Tonight.”

Beyond his contributions to Boston, DeCarlo also explored independent musical projects. In 2012, he formed the band DECARLO with his son, Tommy DeCarlo Jr. The band secured a record deal with Frontier Records Srl and released their album, "Lightning Strikes Twice," in January 2020. DeCarlo further expanded his creative endeavors by recording and releasing the audiobook, "Unlikely Rockstar – The Tommy DeCarlo Story," in November 2021. Demonstrating his continued artistic drive, he signed a solo record deal with Frontier Records in 2022, culminating in the release of his album, "Dancing in the Moonlight," in December 2022.
