Tragedy Strikes Zamfara: IED Detonation Claims Multiple Lives, Injures Eight

A suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated along the Bagega-Anka road in Zamfara State, Nigeria, targeting a commercial vehicle and resulting in multiple casualties. The incident, which occurred on a Thursday, saw a Volkswagen Golf saloon traveling from Bagega to Anka hit the explosive device, leading to immediate devastation.

Eyewitnesses at the scene reported a grim death toll of nine persons, noting instances of striking dismemberment. However, the State Police Command officially confirmed that six individuals were killed, while six others sustained various degrees of injury. Another report indicated eight injured passengers were taken to the primary healthcare centre in Bagega, including a woman, her child, and six men. Emergency workers reportedly took over 20 minutes to arrive at the scene to assist the victims. Those injured were swiftly evacuated to the hospital for urgent medical attention and are currently receiving emergency treatment.

The Bagega-Anka road has been under a state of virtual siege, according to locals, following a bandit attack on a military base near Bagega village the previous week. This has led to an intense period of fighting between security forces and armed groups, creating a high-tension environment. Villagers in the area have been forced to rely on military escorts for essential travel, highlighting the persistent threats they face. Anka, the local government headquarters, is known to be a significant hotspot for terrorist activities in western Zamfara State, further contributing to the region's instability.

In response to the explosion, the State Police Command's spokesman, DSP Yazid Abubakar, stated that the command’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was promptly mobilized to the area. The team conducted a thorough sweep of the route to detect and neutralize any secondary devices, successfully clearing the road for public use. Additionally, Special Tactical teams and sister security agencies have been deployed to the troubled axis to conduct confidence-building patrols and work towards restoring normalcy. It was noted that DSP Yazid Abubakar did not respond to subsequent inquiries via SMS and WhatsApp messages regarding the incident.

The use of IEDs in Zamfara State was historically rare, with a notable instance being in December 2024 when notorious bandit leader Dogo Gide planted four IEDs in the southern Maru area. However, this year alone, six such cases have been reported across the state, with most occurring on the Tsafe-Funtua highway in the Bukkuyum area and within the Anka region, indicating a disturbing escalation in the tactics employed by armed groups.
