Tragedy Strikes Arise News: Anchor Somtochukwu Maduagwu's Death Shocks Nation, Police Under Fire

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has been gripped by sorrow and controversy following the tragic death of Somtochukwu Maduagwu, an Arise News correspondent fondly known as Sommie. The 29-year-old lawyer-turned-broadcaster died on September 29, 2025, after an armed robbery at her Katampe apartment in Abuja, an incident that has sparked conflicting accounts from law enforcement and eyewitnesses, alongside widespread demands for justice and accountability.
According to the FCT Police Command, Commissioner of Police Ajao Adewale stated in an interview that heavily armed men stormed Unique Apartment, a three-storey twin block with 18 flats in Katampe, late on a Monday night. During the robbery, one of the two private security guards on duty was shot while attempting to resist the assailants. Adewale reported that in the ensuing panic, Sommie, who resided on the topmost floor, jumped from the third storey in an attempt to escape. Police officers, who arrived swiftly (by 3:20 am, approximately 20 minutes after the distress call), found her lying unconscious. She was immediately rushed to Maitama General Hospital, where medical staff reportedly attempted CPR, but she sadly did not survive. The Commissioner confirmed that a special investigation team, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Investigation), has been established to apprehend the perpetrators, vowing that “no stone will be left unturned.” He dismissed claims of numerous other robberies in the district, asserting that police respond immediately to every incident, and characterized Maduagwu’s death as a straightforward case of armed robbery, evidenced by stolen phones and cars from the occupied flats.
However, this police narrative has been vehemently challenged by multiple eyewitnesses and family associates. Kaanayo Nwachukwu, a family friend, insisted that Maduagwu’s death was avoidable. He recounted that the robbers systematically moved from one apartment to another, dispossessing residents of valuables. Nwachukwu alleged that despite early alerts to the police, their delayed response allowed the robbers ample time to terrorize occupants. Terrified by the commotion, Maduagwu attempted to escape by jumping from her window before the robbers reached her flat, sustaining critical injuries. Crucially, Nwachukwu stated that when the police eventually arrived minutes later, Maduagwu was still alive, describing the tragedy as a “failure of the Nigerian system.”
Adding to the controversy are serious allegations of medical negligence. Witnesses claim that upon arrival at Maitama General Hospital, medical personnel at the facility demanded identification before commencing treatment for Maduagwu, despite her critical condition. This alleged delay, according to eyewitnesses, directly contributed to her death.
The tragic incident has ignited a national outcry and prompted numerous calls for an immediate and independent investigation. Sommie’s grieving family, through her elder brother Engineer Obi Maduagwu, urged the federal government and security agencies to swiftly unmask and prosecute those responsible for her “senseless and painful” killing. Arise News executives, who paid a condolence visit, lauded Sommie’s brilliance and commitment to justice, conveying heartfelt sympathies.
The International Press Centre (IPC) and the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) have been particularly vocal. IPC’s Executive Director, Lanre Arogundade, described Maduagwu’s death as devastating and demanded a thorough, independent investigation into both the armed robbery and the alleged medical negligence. The IPC warned that a failure to bring those responsible to justice would foster impunity, creating a dangerous environment for citizens and media professionals alike, thereby threatening press freedom and democratic accountability. The organization urged the Nigeria Police Force and the FCT Command to conduct a transparent probe and publicly release its findings. Furthermore, it called upon the Nigerian Government to reform the nation’s emergency response and healthcare systems, which allegedly failed Maduagwu in her moment of need, and demanded a public explanation from hospital authorities regarding the treatment delay.
Prominent figures across Nigeria have also expressed their condolences and demanded justice. Former President Goodluck Jonathan described her passing as a “heartbreaking tragedy,” urging security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure justice to rekindle the nation’s resolve for a safer Nigeria. Minister of Information Mohammed Idris, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, and Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda all condemned the incident, highlighting her integrity, commitment to truth, and the profound loss to the Nigerian media landscape. The Labour Party, alongside other professional associations such as the National Broadcasting Commission and the Association of Corporate Affairs Managers of Banks, described Maduagwu’s death as a direct consequence of Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, calling for urgent reforms, including a state of emergency on security and legislation for private detective institutes. Sommie, admired for her passion for journalism, professionalism, and advocacy, leaves behind a legacy as one of Nigeria’s brightest young voices. Her untimely death has intensified the national debate on insecurity, with her family, colleagues, and leaders united in demanding swift justice and accountability to honor her memory and end impunity.
