Tragedy in Port Harcourt: Police Shooting Sparks Outrage After UNIPORT Graduate Killed

A tragic incident in Port Harcourt has led to the death of 22-year-old motorist, Anthony Obodo, after an alleged shooting involving a police officer. The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the detention of the officer, Corporal Alfred Louis, who is allegedly responsible for the shooting that occurred on August 27, 2026. Preliminary findings by the Command, as stated by its Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Blessing Agabe Kaborlo, indicate that an altercation and subsequent scuffle took place between Obodo and the officer, during which a gun was fired. The incident not only resulted in Obodo’s death but also caused injuries to at least three other occupants of the vehicle and a roadside POS operator.

Following the shooting, Corporal Alfred Louis was reportedly attacked and assaulted by an angry mob, sustaining multiple injuries. The Command stated that the officer and members of his team have been taken to the State Criminal Investigation Department for thorough investigation. They will face appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with the law, pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation. The Police Command has unequivocally condemned the action, stressing that it does not reflect professionalism in policing and affirmed its commitment to taking strict disciplinary action against any erring police officers, assuring the public that no officer found engaged in unethical conduct would be shielded.

The incident sparked protests by youths in the Agip/Ada George axis of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, demanding the arrest and prosecution of the police officer. Anthony Obodo, a recent graduate of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), was reportedly waiting for his call-up letter from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and was running a transport service to save money. According to residents and sources, the police personnel on duty allegedly double-crossed the bus Obodo was driving and demanded money. Obodo reportedly stated he had no money and was unaware he was being chased, after which a policeman from the patrol team allegedly shot him.

However, conflicting accounts from some residents who witnessed the event suggest that the UNIPORT graduate had allegedly failed to stop when flagged down by the police officers on patrol, leading one of the officers to open fire at the vehicle after his refusal to comply. The injured victims, including the passengers of the bus and the POS operator, were rushed to Palmas Hospital for emergency care, where Obodo was confirmed dead.

Mr. Princewill Obodo, the deceased's father from Agba Ndele, Emohua Local Government Area, expressed profound anger over reports labeling his son as a fraudster or 'Yahoo Boy' after the incident. He passionately called for justice, emphasizing that his late son was a struggling young man engaged in a legitimate business to support himself before his untimely death. While the Command initially confirmed the detention via its PPRO, ASP Blessing Agabe Kaborlo, later attempts by Daily Trust to reach the PPRO for further comments proved unsuccessful, as he reportedly did not pick calls since Thursday evening and throughout Friday.
