Traffic incidents in Nigeria

Published 2 months ago2 minute read

Lagos, Nigeria – A massive traffic gridlock has paralyzed the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway following a multi-vehicle accident involving a container-laden trailer near the Kara axis, close to Berger Bus Stop. The incident, occurring on the Ibadan-bound carriageway, has caused severe disruptions, blocking multiple lanes and throwing the major highway into complete chaos.

As of the latest reports, emergency response teams are on-site, employing cranes to clear the wreckage. Personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and the Nigeria Police Force are actively managing the unfolding situation. The traffic jam has extended beyond the 7Up area, profoundly impacting both outbound and inbound traffic flow.

Tensions have escalated as some motorists, desperately trying to circumvent the gridlock, have resorted to driving against traffic, further exacerbating the already dire circumstances. This incident follows a series of previous traffic disruptions on the ever-congested expressway.

Olamide Ajayi, a commuter en route to Ibadan, expressed his frustration: "I’ve been stuck in one spot for over two hours. People are stepping out of their cars. There’s no movement, and tempers are flaring."

Eyewitnesses at the crash site described a harrowing scene. Ugochukwu Nnaji, who was headed to Berger when the accident occurred, stated, "The trailer is jackknifed across the road, and several cars are crushed under its weight. It’s a complete mess."

Authorities are advising motorists to avoid the Ojodu Berger axis for the time being and to seek alternative routes. Commuters with pressing engagements are urged to consider delaying their trips until the expressway is cleared. An FRSC officer at the scene commented, "We are doing our best to resolve the situation quickly and safely. We urge everyone to remain calm and cooperate with traffic officials."

In a separate incident in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), no fewer than five individuals lost their lives in another terrible accident on Karu Bridge, inward Karu Site, on Friday. Eyewitness accounts indicate that a truck laden with cement experienced brake failure while descending Kugbo hill, causing the catastrophic event. The truck reportedly crushed several vehicles and their occupants before being intercepted near Karu Roundabout by commercial motorcyclists while attempting to flee.

This tragic event comes merely a month after a similar fatal incident on the same Karu Bridge, where a CNG-powered trailer lost its brakes, resulting in multiple fatalities. Security operatives were present at the scene, working to transport the injured to nearby hospitals as reports were being filed.
