Fatal Road Crash in Oyo Claims Five Lives

A tragic road accident on Tuesday morning near the Sanyo area of Ibadan, Oyo State, has resulted in the deaths of five individuals. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Oyo Sector Command, confirmed the incident, which occurred around 8 AM on the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway and involved a pile-up of seven vehicles.

According to Mayowa Odewo, the Public Education Officer for the FRSC, the fatal crash included articulated vehicles, commercial taxis, and private cars. Specifically, three articulated trucks, two private cars, and two Nissan Micra taxis were severely damaged due to the impact of the multiple collision. The deceased were identified as three females and two males, with a breakdown indicating one male child, one male adult, and three female adults among the victims.

Eyewitness accounts detail that the accident was triggered when an articulated truck attempted to reverse out of an abandoned filling station along the expressway. It was subsequently hit from behind by another articulated truck. This initial collision set off a chain reaction, leading to a pile-up as more trucks rammed into the chaos. The large vehicles ploughed into smaller vehicles, including commercial Micra taxis and private cars. Tragically, one of the Micra cars was completely crushed, resulting in the instantaneous deaths of its driver and three passengers.

Beyond the five fatalities, one person sustained critical injuries, while five others suffered minor injuries in the unfortunate event. Emergency response teams swiftly evacuated the deceased to Adeoyo hospital mortuary, with one corpse released to a relative with police permission. The injured are currently receiving treatment at a hospital.

In the aftermath, the wreckage of the vehicles has been moved to the Sanyo Police Station for further investigation. Normalcy is being restored in the affected area, with the combined efforts of FRSC officials, traffic police, and other security agents working to disperse the gridlock caused by the accident and manage the scene effectively.
