Trade ministry accelerates e-commerce development in Vietnam
Published 3 weeks ago• 2 minute read

Under a decision recently signed by MoIT Minister Nguyen Hong Dien, the Department of E-commerce and Digital Economy has been assigned to work alongside major e-commerce platforms in order to implement regional connectivity programmes, cross-border e-commerce initiatives, and strategies to further drive online product consumption.
A key focus will be supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), cooperatives, craft villages, and local producers in accessing and expanding online sales channels.
The department is also expected to roll out initiatives promoting Vietnamese goods and regional specialties on e-commerce platforms and social networks, encouraging digital transformation in business operations, enhancing brand value, and increasing market reach, both domestically and for export.
In order to build capacity, the MoIT has emphasised the importance of comprehensive training schemes to improve legal understanding and practical skills in e-commerce and cross-border trade. These programmes will target management personnel, local businesses, and cooperatives, with a specific focus on digital solutions, big data, AI applications, and technologies that support digital transformation. The goal is to help exporters strengthen their global competitiveness and adapt to evolving international business models.
In addition, Minister Dien has tasked the Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency (Vietrade) with spearheading enhanced trade promotion activities, particularly large-scale and sector-specific programmes targeting key markets such as the European Union, the United States, China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and ASEAN countries.
The Agency of Foreign Trade, the Department of Domestic Market Development, and other relevant units within the ministry are also urged to expand their efforts to promote exports and develop the domestic market through e-commerce and other digital channels.
