TotalEnergies and Mistral AI Announce Strategic Partnership for AI in Energy

TotalEnergies, a French oil major (Paris:TTE; LSE:TTE; NYSE:TTE), and Mistral AI, a French startup, announced on June 12, 2025, a significant collaboration. This partnership aims to accelerate artificial intelligence (AI) innovation to support TotalEnergies' multi-energy strategy, with a particular focus on advancing low-carbon energies and improving the performance of its activities.

Under the terms of this collaboration, the two companies will establish a joint innovation lab. This lab will be staffed by teams from both TotalEnergies and Mistral AI. Mistral AI will contribute its advanced AI technologies, while TotalEnergies will bring its extensive expertise in energy production, especially in renewable and low-carbon energy sectors, to test and design sophisticated digital solutions.

The initial focus of the lab will be on several key use cases. These include designing an AI assistant for TotalEnergies' 1,000 researchers to aid them in developing new energies and reducing the company's environmental footprint. Additionally, the lab will work on developing decision-support solutions to enhance the performance of TotalEnergies' industrial assets and lower its CO₂ emissions. Furthermore, the partnership will aim to implement support solutions to improve customer experience and help customers save energy.

Beyond these initial applications, the joint innovation lab will also test digital solutions for other use cases, with a specific interest in renewable energy production. In light of the growing importance of digital sovereignty in Europe, TotalEnergies and Mistral AI will jointly explore opportunities for TotalEnergies to adopt AI infrastructure.

This partnership reflects TotalEnergies' strategic decision to leverage digital technology and artificial intelligence to improve performance at its industrial facilities and support its ongoing energy transition. The company has previously utilized AI primarily in earth science and for enhancing predictive maintenance or detecting machinery issues in its facilities. Now, AI is recognized as playing a vital role in developing new opportunities, particularly in renewable energy production, CO₂ emissions reduction, and the creation of innovative services that empower customers to control and optimize their energy consumption.

TotalEnergies’ Digital Factory, which celebrates its fifth anniversary in 2025, underscores the company's commitment to digital innovation. The Digital Factory employs 300 developers, data scientists, and other digital experts. It has already developed over a hundred solutions, sixty of which utilize technologies ranging from machine learning to generative AI.

Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, "We are delighted to work with Mistral AI, a leading French player in artificial intelligence. This deal reflects our intention to contribute to the emergence of a technological ecosystem in Europe, and will allow us to explore new opportunities to further embed AI into our activities. AI has huge potential to transform energy systems, and this partnership was motivated by our pioneering spirit and ongoing search for innovation."
