Ghana Mourns: Nation Bids Farewell to Esteemed Defence Minister Dr. Omane Boamah

A solemn funeral service in Koforidua on Saturday, December 13, 2025, brought together Ghana's political elite and citizens to bid farewell to the late Minister of Defence, Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah. The ceremony, held at Jackson Park, was momentarily halted by unexpected heavy rains and strong winds, which many mourners interpreted as a poignant celestial tribute to the distinguished statesman. Dr. Omane Boamah's life was tragically cut short on August 6, 2025, in a military helicopter crash, a loss widely described as national rather than partisan.

Amidst the profound grief, a powerful message of political unity was delivered by Mr. Hackman Owusu-Agyemang, Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Council of Elders. Commiserating with the bereaved family and the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Owusu-Agyemang paid a deeply personal and glowing tribute to the late Minister. He described Dr. Omane Boamah, a veteran politician and key figure in the NPP, as a dedicated public servant and a brilliant young man, committed and focused on every responsibility he undertook. While acknowledging the political differences that later placed them on opposing sides, a natural part of democratic life, Mr. Owusu-Agyemang stressed that such divisions must never overshadow the integrity and potential contributions of individuals like Dr. Omane Boamah. He appealed for a more harmonious political environment, stating, “We are one people in this country, and we need to work together and co-exist so that there’ll be no problem within.”

The high-profile gathering saw a convergence of government officials, party stalwarts, and political opponents. Leading the government delegation was First Lady Mrs. Lordina Mahama, underscoring the national importance of the loss. She was accompanied by a roster of the nation’s top political leadership, including Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga, and Minister of Finance Dr. Ato Forson. Also present were current and former ministers and appointees such as the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam George, and Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Smith. The host team included Eastern Regional Minister Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey and the NDC’s Regional Chairman, Mark Oliver Kevor. Further tributes were offered by Mr. Samson Asaki Awingobit, National Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC), and the NDC’s Eastern Regional Organiser, Mr. Hackman Kabore, who shared fond memories of their interactions with the late Minister.

Dr. Omane Boamah’s career trajectory was exceptionally diverse, marked by a profound commitment to public service. An alumnus of Pope John Senior High School and Minor Seminary in Koforidua, he trained as a medical doctor at the University of Ghana Medical School. He further specialized with a Master’s degree in Health Policy Planning and Financing from institutions including the London School of Economics and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. His political tenure saw him serve in various capacities: Deputy Minister for Environment, Science and Technology (2009–2012), Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports (2012–2013), Minister for Communications and Presidential Spokesperson (2013–2017) where he championed initiatives like child online protection and the establishment of Ghana’s Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT), Director of Elections and IT for the NDC (2024), and finally as Minister of Defence from January 2025 until his untimely death.

The tragic military helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, involving a Ghana Air Force Harbin Z-9EH helicopter with tail number GHF 631, claimed the lives of all eight people on board. Besides Dr. Omane Boamah, other prominent personalities who perished included Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister of Environment, Science and Technology; Muniru Mohammed Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Sarpong, NDC Vice-Chair; Samuel Aboagye, a former parliamentary candidate; Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala; Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Despite the rain-interrupted ceremony, mourners believe the enduring legacy of the medical doctor, scholar, and politician remains firmly imprinted on the nation he served. Dr. Omane Boamah’s life, marked by humility, dedication, and service, and his commitment to national development were highlighted by all tributes. The bipartisan acknowledgment of his selfless service and contribution to Ghana’s democratic development solidified the nation’s shared grief. Dr. Omane Boamah is survived by his wife and three children.
