According to The New York Times, the primary suspect in the stabbing is Santino Casio, a 41-year-old convicted murderer currently serving a life sentence at the California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi.

conducted a spot check on the facility's website, which revealed that Casio was sentenced in February 2004 for second-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder, and the use of a deadly weapon that caused serious bodily harm.

Despite being eligible for parole in 2018 and again in 2022, both applications were denied, with his next parole hearing scheduled for November 2028.

Additionally, the BBC reported that Casio’s criminal activity did not end after he was imprisoned.

In 2008, he was sentenced to six years for assaulting a fellow inmate with a deadly weapon, and in 2018, he received an additional two-year sentence for possessing a weapon in prison.

In this latest incident, Casio allegedly stabbed Lanez 14 times, leaving the rapper with multiple injuries across his body, including a collapsed lung.

The attack was so severe that Lanez had to be transferred to a medical facility outside the prison, where he is currently recuperating.

Prison officials confirmed that Casio has since been moved to restricted housing as investigations into the assault continue.

Lanez is currently serving a 10-year sentence after being convicted of shooting rapper Megan Thee Stallion in the foot in 2020.

Here are some reactions from netizens to the news:

"They definitely paid that man. He had nothing to lose if he’s already serving LIFE in prison — no way a 42 year-old dude is a Megan fan. They clearly convinced him to do it.

"Why people who doing life don’t get there own prison? Makes a lot more sense why keep someone in for years or months with a person doing life that alone would cause hate."

"This is why Tory should not have been in general pop."

"Stabbed in the head twice, he was definitely tryna take him out."

"Yup figured it was someone that had nothing to lose."

"Glad he pulled thru. Prison is scary."
