Holland, who has consistently expressed his desire to be directly involved in selecting and guiding his successor, recently revealed that a comprehensive strategy has been meticulously developed behind the scenes for quite some time.
Speaking on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Holland disclosed that these succession plans have been actively worked on for approximately five years, dating back to the completion of “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” He emphasized that while the plan is subject to evolution, he possesses a “really clear vision” for how the baton will be passed, finding the prospect genuinely exciting for the future of the beloved character.
The identity of the next Spider-Man remains a key point of speculation. Holland has openly voiced his keen interest in bringing Miles Morales to the live-action screen. During the “Brand New Day” press tour with the AP, he articulated a strong “desire to bring Miles Morales to the screen” and a commitment to “shepherd the lucky young kid who gets that job.” This aspiration gains significant relevance as Sony’s animated “Spider-Verse” franchise, featuring Miles Morales, is set to conclude next summer with “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,” potentially clearing a path for Miles’s live-action debut alongside Holland’s Peter Parker.
Beyond Miles Morales, Holland has also entertained other possibilities for the next generation of web-slingers. In an earlier interview with Empire, he expressed his eagerness to help establish the next chapter, stating, “For whoever’s next, whether that is a Miles Morales or a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman or something like that, I would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter.” He concluded by expressing his deep contentment if he could replicate the mentorship role that Robert Downey Jr. played in his own career, allowing him to “swing off into the sunset” knowing the franchise is in good hands.
