TK Maxx Bargain Hunter Feels 'Mugged Off' Over Leggings Deal Gone Wrong

A fashion enthusiast's joy over what she believed to be an incredible bargain at TK Maxx quickly turned to amusement and a touch of frustration upon uncovering the true nature of her discount. Elle, a shopper who shared her experience on TikTok, was initially delighted to find a pair of thick, ribbed brown leggings from the brand Stradivarius at her local TK Maxx.

The leggings bore a brand price tag indicating an original cost of £17.99. To Elle's excitement, a prominent red clearance sticker on the item showed a reduced price of just £4. "I picked up these leggings from TK Maxx," she recounted in her video. "They're from that brand Stradivarius and they're £18 on the label... but they were £4 and I thought, that is SO cheap!"

However, her curiosity led her to peel back the clearance sticker, only to reveal the original TK Maxx price beneath: £4.99. The revelation left her stunned. "But I was curious what the label said underneath so I took it off - £4.99, are you actually joking?" she exclaimed. What she thought was a significant saving from £17.99 to £4 was, in reality, a mere 99p reduction from the store's original price. "I was telling my friends I got such a bargain - I got 99p off! I was fuming," she added, humorously noting that "TK Maxx has mugged me off!"

Her video quickly garnered reactions from other shoppers. While some commenters pointed out that £4 for Stradivarius leggings was still a bargain, Elle agreed, conceding, "It is!! Just made me laugh them knocking 99p off." Others shared similar experiences, with one user recalling finding shoes for £19.20 that were originally priced at £19.99.

Beyond the pricing mishap, one commenter issued a practical warning about the leggings themselves, stating, "I have had like 3 pairs of these leggings and they always seem to get the same tear on the bum after like one wear. So be careful!" Elle responded with disappointment, acknowledging, "Oh no, that’s a shame!"

For those genuinely seeking substantial savings at TK Maxx, advice from Grace Forell, known as The Sustainable Shopper, suggests checking the "secret codes" on price tags. According to Forell, these single-digit codes can help shoppers "spend more wisely." She explained the meaning of the most common numbers found: '1' indicates a product specifically made for TK Maxx, meaning it's unlikely to be a "wow bargain." A '7' signifies a "packaway" item, typically from a previous season, and is often discounted. However, the most coveted code is '2', which Forell identifies as the "thriftiest number," pointing to the best potential deals.
