Tinubu's Stern Warning: APC Must Shun 'Do-Or-Die' Politics in Primaries

President Bola Tinubu has backed the consensus option ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary elections, warning party members against do-or-die politics.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Tinubu described the commencement of the primaries as a historic moment for the APC as it prepares for its fourth election cycle.
The president noted that the party was founded on the principles of progressive politics, consensus democracy, sacrifice, and selflessness.
“We founded the All Progressives Congress (APC) on the firm principles of progressive politics, consensus democracy, and personal devotion and sacrifice,” he said.
Tinubu said the primaries, beginning with the house of representatives and ending with the presidential primary on May 25, are a test of the party’s unity and resilience.
“The primary elections, kicking off with those for House of Representatives aspirants tomorrow and culminating in the presidential primaries on May 25, 2026, are not mere exercises to produce our standard bearers,” he said.
Tinubu also laid down clear expectations for all involved, stating that both contestants and voters must maintain peace and be prepared to act as true sportsmen and women, prioritizing the overarching interests of the party and the nation.
He specifically cautioned against any behavior that could undermine democratic principles or compromise party unity.
The President advised winners to refrain from gloating in victory and urged losers to exhibit good sportsmanship by accepting defeat gracefully and preparing for future opportunities.
Recognizing the potential for internal discord, President Tinubu encouraged APC leaders at various state levels to embrace consensus arrangements wherever feasible.
He noted that such an option, in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act (2026) and the party’s constitution, is a commendable strategy that effectively mitigates rancor and ill-will among party members.
Furthermore, he appealed to party leadership, governors, and other prominent figures to ensure absolute fairness during the primaries.
He implored them to rise above personal sentiment and provide a truly level playing field for all aspirants, guaranteeing equitable participation.
A key aspect of President Tinubu’s address was his appeal for enhanced inclusion, particularly for women and youth, within the party’s political processes.
He highlighted that the meaningful participation of these demographics is a matter close to his heart, urging primary voters and leaders at all levels to give special consideration to women and youth in the contest.
Lastly, he issued a distinct warning to the Police and other security agencies, strictly cautioning them against any interference in the primaries beyond their primary duty of maintaining law and order, reinforcing that their role is confined to ensuring a peaceful exercise and nothing more.
President Tinubu concluded by wishing all aspirants success and expressing unwavering optimism that the APC would emerge from the primaries stronger and more unified.
