Tinubu's 2027 Re-election Drive Kicks Off: Key Allies Rally Support

President Bola Tinubu's bid for a second term in 2027 is rapidly gaining momentum, with key political figures and groups across Nigeria pledging their unconditional support. This growing backing comes from influential segments, including former members of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and a prominent former state governor, all aligning to ensure the continuity of the current administration's 'Renewed Hope Agenda'.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, on Wednesday, assured President Tinubu of the unwavering support of all members of the defunct CPC in the current All Progressives Congress (APC) administration. Speaking in Abuja during a pivotal meeting between President Tinubu and key figures from the defunct CPC at the Presidential Villa, Speaker Tajudeen unveiled plans for a robust movement aimed at securing President Tinubu’s return for a second term in 2027. He emphasized that all former CPC members, who were instrumental in forming the APC in 2013 alongside other legacy political parties, remain committed to supporting the execution of Tinubu’s agenda, which seeks to reposition Nigeria for the betterment of its citizens.

Speaker Tajudeen, who himself first entered the House of Representatives in 2011 under the platform of the defunct CPC, described the meeting with President Tinubu as historic. He noted that its primary purpose was to express solidarity and appreciation for the President’s ongoing efforts. “Indeed, today is a day of history—the very first day that the former members of CPC gathered in large numbers to visit our president to show support and appreciation for what he has been doing,” Speaker Tajudeen stated.

He further assured President Tinubu, “I want to seize this opportunity, Mr. President, to assure you of the unconditional support of all former CPC members in your administration.” He also challenged any claims of disunity within the CPC, asserting, “I’m sure from the calibre of people you see here, you’ll be convinced that all those saying that ‘CPC is broken; CPC is not with this administration,’ it’s just a lie. More than 90 per cent of those who were active during the time of the CPC are represented here.”

In a significant gesture, Speaker Abbas also expressed profound gratitude to President Tinubu for the respect and support he extended to the late former president, Muhammadu Buhari, who served as the national leader of the CPC. He recounted, “I would like to also seize this opportunity to appreciate and thank you immensely, Your Excellency, for the support you have given to our late former president (Muhammadu Buhari), who had attempted to be president several times, but God did not answer his prayer until you came into the picture in 2010 to offer a hand of partnership to him—a partnership that resulted in actualising the dream of every CPC member.”

He further added, “Thank you very much, Your Excellency, for the role you played in 2010, and thank you for the support you gave our former leader. We will truly not forget that support you have given, which today we are proud of, that even though when we fielded him under CPC, he couldn’t win, but with the combined efforts of your humble self and him as well as other party members, we were able to realise that dream of making him our president.”

The Speaker also acknowledged President Tinubu’s unprecedented respect shown during the burial of the late former president. “Mr. President, we also want to thank you for the unprecedented support you have given to the family of the late president during his demise. It was unprecedented in the history of Nigeria for any former president to be accorded such kind of respect.

The time you took; the people you sent to go all the way to the United Kingdomto give their last respects and bring the corpse back to Katsina, and the number of times both you and the First Lady took to go to Katsina and Kaduna to pay your last respects are truly commendable, Your Excellency,” Tajudeen noted, concluding with a firm declaration: “We are together with you today, we will be with you tomorrow, and we will be with you forever.”

Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, Speaker Tajudeen informed the President that defunct CPC members have collectively resolved to form a movement specifically dedicated to ensuring his second term. “Your Excellency, I want to, on behalf of the entire former CPC members, inform and assure you that the CPC family in every state, that we have all resolved that we will go back home and create ‘Former CPC Members for Asiwaju’ in all our states,” he announced.

This movement, he elaborated, will be cascaded down to all local governments, wards, and polling units to continuously gather support for President Tinubu and his administration. He assured that for 2027, “Insha Allah, CPC members will be at the forefront of ensuring that you return to continue with the good work you’re doing for this country.”

Finally, Speaker Tajudeen expressed appreciation for the representation and respect given to CPC members within the current government. He highlighted a significant increase in their political leverage: “This is the very first time that we have three serving governors who were of CPC extraction in this government. Even during the active days of CPC, we were only having one—the former governor of Nasarawa State. But to God be the glory, today we have three governors; we have so many ministers, so many members of the House of Representatives, and so many chief executives who are in this government. We believe that most of them were able to make their dreams possible because of your support for them and for the former CPC.”

Adding to this groundswell of support, former Governor of Lagos State,Akinwunmi Ambode, has also publicly endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid. Ambode made this declaration in Badagry, Lagos, during a sensitisation programme on Permanent Voter Card (PVC) registration, where he urged residents to register and collect their PVCs in preparation for the 2027 polls.

Speaking through the Director General of the Tinubu-Ambo Support Group, Dr. Seyi Bamigbade, the former governor asserted that President Tinubu has laid a solid foundation for the nation’s growth and therefore merits a second term to consolidate on the achievements recorded so far. He passionately called on Lagosians and Nigerians at large to ensure the President's re-election in 2027, stating, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has proven his capacity to lead this country with vision and courage. I call on Lagosians and Nigerians at large to ensure he gets a second term in 2027 so we can all continue to benefit from his progressive leadership.” Ambode also took the opportunity to offer himself to serve Lagos State again, with a renewed vision to build on past gains and address current realities.

The sensitisation campaign, spearheaded by Ambode’s representatives, is part of broader efforts to mobilize Lagos residents for active participation in the democratic process. The initiative aims to ensure that every eligible voter in Lagos registers and collects their voter’s card, with a clear message: “no PVC, no voting.” The group is committed to conducting house-to-house sensitisation, believing that both President Tinubu and Mr. Ambode represent continuity, progress, and people-focused governance. The event garnered significant attention, attracting community leaders, youth groups, and various stakeholders who pledged their support for both President Tinubu and Ambode in the upcoming elections.
