The Rock Hits a High Note: Dwayne Johnson Surprises Fans with Emotional Music Debut!

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is expanding his repertoire beyond body slams and acting, officially stepping into the music world with the release of his poignant new pop ballad, “Your Dad.” This tender “girl dad tune” is featured on the brand new 'Moana: Voices Across the Ocean' album, which serves as a musical companion to the recent live-action 'Moana' reboot. Johnson co-wrote the emotional track with 2023 American Idol winner Iam Tongi, showcasing a softer side to the burly movie star known for his intense action roles and family-friendly cinematic ventures.

In “Your Dad,” Johnson’s whispery vocals are set against a backdrop of gently plucked acoustic guitar. The accompanying video features intimate home movies of Johnson lovingly interacting with his three daughters: Simone Alexandra, 24, Jasmine Lia, 10, and Tiana Gia, 8. The lyrics reflect profound paternal affection, with lines such as, "My, my whole life changed/ From the moment I held you in my heart I knew/ That life would never be the same," and an empowering message, "Now you go move those mountains/ And sail across the oceans/ Go show the world and prove/ There’s nothing you can’t do."

While this marks a significant musical release, Johnson is not entirely new to the recording studio. He previously contributed a pugnacious intro to the 2000 Wyclef Jean song “It Doesn’t Matter” and famously proved his singing capabilities with the Lin-Manuel Miranda-written “You’re Welcome” from the original 2016 animated 'Moana'. Johnson humorously describes his vocal style, stating, “I always like to say I sing from the heart — and I sing in keys that don’t exist. So it’s a good combo.” He attributes his comfort with singing to his upbringing, noting that "growing up, in our family, and generally in Polynesian families, there is a lot of singing and there’s a lot of ceremonial dancing and things like that. So it was kind of in the ether as I was growing up.”

His musical influences span various genres, including childhood idols like Sam Cooke, Elvis, George Jones, and Willie Nelson, who notably gifted him one of only 100 replicas of his iconic Martin “Trigger” guitar. Johnson admits to a somewhat limited songwriting résumé, mentioning only "a little bit" of assistance on Tech N9ne’s 2020 track “Face Off.” The genesis of “Your Dad” came when Johnson, alongside his wife Lauren and fellow producers Tiana and Kayla, sought contributions for the new Moana companion album and contacted Iam Tongi. Tongi returned two days later with the original version of "My Dad."

Johnson recounted his emotional reaction to Tongi's original composition: “I heard it and got very emotional and I was crying, because it’s a song that he wrote singing to his young kids that he doesn’t have yet — he’s getting married in a couple of months — about his dad that passed away.” Tongi’s song involved telling his future children about their amazing grandfather and also singing to his father in heaven, saying, “Hey, I’m gonna tell them that you moved mountains, and you fought giants.” Johnson, moved by the sentiment but acknowledging his own "complicated" relationship with his late father, former professional wrestler Rocky Johnson, requested that Tongi rework the song to celebrate his daughters instead.

Despite movies and professional wrestling being his primary career vehicles, Johnson shared that music has consistently served as an "anchor" in his life. He highlighted traditional country music as a particular "north star" and hinted at exploring this genre further. Recalling his teenage years in Nashville, where he unsuccessfully attempted to sneak into Broad Street bars to perform, Johnson envisions his potential musical niche as "old-school soul with some country flavor," likening it to a blend of Sam Cooke and Merle Haggard. For “Your Dad,” however, he emphasizes that the song's value lies purely in its personal significance. “There’s no pressure of an expectation to deliver something that, ‘Well, how are the sales, and how’s the box office? And how’s the streams.’ It’s just from me to them,” he affirmed, making it clear this creation is a heartfelt gift for his daughters.
