Ford's Beastly Overlander: Is the 2026 AEV Super Duty FXL the Ultimate Off-Road Machine?

American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) has expanded its renowned upfitting expertise to the Ford Super Duty platform, introducing the 2026 Ford AEV Super Duty FXL. This new vehicle builds on AEV's reputation, established through its AEV-equipped ZR2 Bison Chevy and AEV Edition GMC pickups, as well as its conversions for Jeeps and Rams. The FXL model represents AEV's latest endeavor to transform a heavy-duty truck into an ultimate overlanding machine, specifically engineered to accommodate massive 40-inch tires and venture far off the beaten path.

Dubbed the “F40” of overlanding, the FXL designation signifies its substantial 40-inch footwear. AEV's approach involves a comprehensive re-engineering of the truck's chassis, suspension, and bodywork to ensure optimal accommodation and performance with these large tires. The suspension system features a 4-inch lift, achieved through new, taller progressive-rate springs in the front and lift blocks positioned between the rear leaf springs and axle in the back. This is a distinct approach compared to the Ram Prospector's 3-inch lift, which modified mounting points while retaining stock springs. Further enhancements include relocated Panhard rods and other links, coupled with AEV-tuned Bilstein dampers. Electronic calibration updates are also integrated to ensure that the truck's critical safety and driver assistance systems continue to function correctly despite the significant modifications.

A core component of the FXL's overlanding capability is its specialized wheel and tire package. The truck is equipped with custom-developed BFGoodrich 40x13.50R18 HD-Terrain T/A KT tires, mounted on 10.0 x 18-inch AEV-designed Katmai DualSport wheels. The "DualSport" nomenclature indicates their versatility for both conventional and beadlock tire mounting, though the latter requires owners to replace standard protection rings with a dedicated beadlock ring. AEV notes the surprising popularity of the beadlock option, even though the rig can safely be aired down to 20 psi for off-road use without them. However, it's worth noting that an onboard compressor option is not currently available, nor is there a dedicated provision for a 40-inch spare tire, though a tailgate mount for one is reportedly in development.

Initial testing of the 2026 Ford AEV Super Duty FXL revealed a mixed set of characteristics. On the positive side, the vehicle demonstrated strong performance and remarkably thorough systems integration, proving to be quieter and less clumsy than expected for such a highly modified truck. Conversely, the sheer height of the FXL makes entry quite a climb, and its substantial dimensions mean it will struggle to fit in many conventional parking spaces or tighter trails. Furthermore, drivers must meticulously plan braking maneuvers due to the vehicle's increased mass and elevated center of gravity. Despite these challenges, the AEV Super Duty FXL stands as a testament to American Expedition Vehicles' commitment to creating highly capable, adventure-ready trucks.
