The Gorge Filmmakers Set to Adapt Acclaimed Horror Novel as Feature Film

Modern horror icons Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill are bringing Road of Bones to the silver screen.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the hit filmmaking duo who most recently served as producers on The Gorge arfor Sony Pictures' Screen Gems. As with previous projects such as Sinister and The Black Phone, Derrickson and Cargill will share writing duties, while Derrickson will helm the film as director. Road of Bones is the first project to emerge from the first-look deal Derrickson and Cargill's Crooked Highway reached with Sony/Screen Gems.

The X-Men Origins: Wolverine stars are about to collaborate on two Off-Broadway stage plays from director Ian Rickson.

Road of Bones takes place on the Kolyma Highway, a very real 1,200 mile stretch of road in Siberia that crosses through some of the most treacherous and unforgiving terrain on Earth. Per the novel's official synopsis, "Felix Teigland, or "Teig," is a documentary producer, and when he learns about the Road of Bones, he realizes he's stumbled upon untapped potential. Accompanied by his camera operator, Teig hires a local Yakut guide to take them to Oymyakon, the coldest settlement on Earth.

Teig is fascinated by the culture along the Road of Bones, and encounters strange characters on the way to the Oymyakon, but when the team arrives, they find the village mysteriously abandoned apart from a mysterious 9-year-old girl... A malignant, animistic shaman and the forest spirits he commands pursues them as they flee the abandoned town and barrel across miles of deserted permafrost. As the chase continues along this road paved with the suffering of angry ghosts, what form will the echoes of their anguish take? Teig and the others will have to find the answers if they want to survive the Road of Bones."

Golden's previous works include his Bram Stoker Award-winning 2017 hit, Ararat, as well as the novel Baltimore, which was written from the notes of Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and serves as the first entry in the pair's Outerverse comic book universe. Golden has also written various novelizations for fan-favorite franchises such as Alien, Predator, and Sons of Anarchy. Golden will serve as an executive producer on the feature film adaptation of Road of Bones alongside Vince Cheng and Pete Donaldson.

Fans of Derrickson and Cargill's work are currently eagerly awaiting the release of The Black Phone 2 this October. The direct follow-up to the 2021 original adapted from Joe Hill's 2004 short story, The Black Phone 2 is set to bring back original stars Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, and Miguel Cazarez Mora in reprisals of their roles as Finney, Gwen, Terrence, and Robin. The Black Phone 2 will also mark the chilling return of Ethan Hawke as the murderous Grabber, though no plot details have been revealed to clue fans into exactly how the infamous serial killer will be making a comeback after seemingly losing his life in the previous film.

Road of Bones does not currently have a planned release date.
