Okowa Supports Tinubu Completing Eight-Year Tenure

Former Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, has voiced his support for President Bola Tinubu to serve a full eight-year tenure. In an interview on ARISE Television on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, Okowa, who was the 2023 Vice Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), urged Nigerians to support Tinubu’s administration until 2031 for the sake of national stability and continuity.
Okowa emphasized the importance of allowing any elected president, including Tinubu, sufficient time to implement their programs. He stated, "For the stability of this nation, I also do believe that, yes, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was elected president in 2023, and for the stability of Nigeria, it is best for us to have him complete his eight-year tenure. Then the presidency can move back to the North. I believe that that is the right thing." He also noted that political competition is no longer strictly defined by the north-south divide.
Addressing the recent defection, Okowa explained that Delta State leaders, as a political family, moved from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) to bring Delta State back into the corridors of power in Nigeria. He clarified that the decision to defect to the APC, along with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and other political leaders in Delta State, was made after thorough consultations.
Okowa added that aligning with the party at the center was the best strategic move for Delta State’s future. He elaborated, "We have a political family in the Delta state. Previously, we were in the PDP. But several things have been going on in the party, the People’s Democratic Party...our stakeholders, our leaders in this state, have sat down to look at the events in the last several months...it did not appear to us that that was a proper political vehicle for us to continue in. Because it did not also appear to us that PDP was ready to be competitive in the 2027 elections." He also mentioned various court cases and internal issues within the PDP as contributing factors to their decision.
Okowa emphasized that the decision to defect was not solely the governor's or his own, but rather a result of extensive consultations with various stakeholders, including non-politicians. He believes their decision is politically sound and in the best interest of the people of Delta State.
On April 23, Okowa joined Sheriff Oborevwori, governor of Delta, and other PDP leaders in the state in joining the APC. Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, later announced that the APC structure in Delta is now fully under the governor’s control.
