Soldier Sentenced to Death for Killing Lover

A General Court Martial in Enugu has sentenced Private Adamu Mohammed to death by hanging for the murder of his girlfriend, Miss Hauwa Ali. Private Abubakar Yusuf was also sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for robbery at a mall in Enugu. The court martial, comprising 11 members, was inaugurated on February 18, 2025, by Major-General Oluyemi Olatoye to address cases involving erring personnel. Lieutenant-Colonel Jonah Unuakhalu stated that Private Mohammed's offense violated Section 106(a) of the Armed Forces Act, while Private Yusuf was convicted under Section 107(1)(b) of the same act.

Brigadier General Sadisu Buhari, the President of the court, affirmed Private Mohammed's guilt after a thorough review of evidence and service records. The court acknowledged pleas for leniency but emphasized the necessity of upholding justice and societal order. Private Yusuf's conviction stemmed from a robbery at a mall, and despite considerations for leniency, the court imposed a 10-year prison term under Section 140(3) due to the absence of a unanimous decision for a maximum sentence.

In a separate case, Peter Nwachukwu, husband of the late gospel singer Osinachi, was sentenced to death by hanging by the FCT High Court in Abuja. Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme ruled that the prosecution successfully proved its case against Nwachukwu beyond a reasonable doubt. Osinachi died on April 8, 2022. The court found Nwachukwu guilty on a 23-count charge, including spousal abuse and cruelty to children. Evidence presented included oral testimonies from 17 witnesses, including the couple's children, and documentary evidence.

Justice Nwosu-Iheme sentenced Nwachukwu to death by hanging on Count 1 and imposed two years imprisonment each on multiple other counts. Allegations included depriving Osinachi of her personal liberty, restricting her movement, and denying her access to funds for medication and household necessities. The Nigerian government has vowed to ensure justice for Osinachi. An autopsy report has been submitted to the ministry of justice, with eyewitnesses and family members claiming that Nwachukwu frequently beat his wife.

In Enugu, Private Adamu Mohammed's death sentence was confirmed following a thorough review by the General Court Martial, with Brigadier General Sadisu Buhari noting it was punishable under Section 106(a) of the Armed Forces Act. Lieutenant Colonel Jonah Unuakhalu provided additional details. The GCM, inaugurated by Major General Oluyemi Olatoye on February 18, 2025, consisted of 11 members. Mr. Buhari emphasized the unanimous judgment was reached after careful consideration of facts, career record, and compassionate pleas. Despite these pleas, the court prioritized justice for the deceased and public interest.
