Back in 2003, The Chicks, then known as The Dixie Chicks, faced significant backlash after Maines publicly criticized President George W. Bush. During a concert in London just before the Iraq War, Maines famously stated, “We do not want this war, this violence and we’re ashamed that the president of the United States is from Texas.” This comment had immediate repercussions; their single “Travelin’ Soldier,” which had reached the top of Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, was pulled from radio rotations by numerous stations within two weeks, causing it to fall out of the top 40.
