The Chicks' lead singer, Natalie Maines, has issued strong criticism against President Trump on Instagram, reflecting her long history of political activism. This latest commentary follows a similar pattern to her 2003 remarks against President George W. Bush, which led to significant backlash and ultimately fueled the themes of their Grammy-winning album "Taking the Long Way."
Natalie Maines, the lead singer of The Chicks and a 12-time Grammy winner, has once again used her platform to express strong political opinions, this time directing sharp criticism towards President Trump.
In a recent Instagram post, Maines conveyed her concerns about the state of democracy, stating, “Our democracy is disappearing right before our eyes. This fugly slut is using your gas money to pay the insurrectionists.

She accompanied her text with additional hashtags such as #democracy, #freespeech, and #fuglyslut, and included photos of Trump alongside individuals involved in the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
This recent critique echoes Maines' history of political outspokenness. Back in 2003, The Chicks, then known as The Dixie Chicks, faced significant backlash after Maines publicly criticized President George W. Bush.
During a concert in London just before the Iraq War, Maines famously stated, “We do not want this war, this violence and we’re ashamed that the president of the United States is from Texas.”
This comment had immediate repercussions; their single “Travelin’ Soldier,” which had reached the top of Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, was pulled from radio rotations by numerous stations within two weeks, causing it to fall out of the top 40.
The trio addressed this political controversy through their music, releasing the song “Not Ready to Make Nice” in 2006.
