The Boys Star Delivers Ominous Final Season Warning: Don't Get Attached!

Collider's Steve Weintraub recently conducted an exclusive interview at CCXP with Eric Kripke, creator of Prime Video's hit series "The Boys," alongside stars Laz Alonso (Mother’s Milk) and Tomer Capone (Frenchie), to discuss the highly anticipated fifth and final season. After a dominant seven-year run, Kripke is bringing the acclaimed superhero drama to its conclusion with Season 5, scheduled to premiere on April 8, with subsequent episodes releasing weekly every Wednesday.
The Season 4 finale left "The Boys" fractured. Hughie, Mother’s Milk, and Frenchie have been sent to a "Freedom Camp," while Annie (Starlight) endeavors to rally a resistance against Homelander’s expanding Supe-centered regime. Meanwhile, Billy Butcher has gone rogue, armed with a powerful Supe-killing virus that holds the potential to drastically alter the world's course.
During the interview, Kripke shared his cautious approach to crafting the series finale. He admitted to tackling the task with an "appropriate amount of terror," underscoring the immense pressure to "nail this" and deliver a satisfying conclusion for fans. Kripke emphasized that the characters serve as the "North Star" in the writers' room, ensuring that each character's grand story, including Frenchie, M.M., Butcher, and Hughie, reaches a conclusion that aligns with their ultimate destiny. He hopes that more than 50% of the audience will be satisfied with how the story wraps up, reiterating that the show's enduring appeal lies primarily in its beloved characters, beyond the outrageous moments.
Laz Alonso and Tomer Capone also reflected on their experience reading the final season's scripts. Alonso described the season as "seismic," noting that every episode felt akin to a previous season finale in terms of emotional depth and action. He expressed the constant reminder that "there's no turning back" as the story progresses. Capone humorously recounted needing red wine while reading the scripts, likening his reaction to "seeing the blood on my teeth" due to the high stakes. He discussed the challenge of grounding their characters in the chaotic world of Season 5 while maintaining an emotional tone for the season's arc.
A significant, yet ominous, warning came from Laz Alonso regarding character fates: "Don't get too attached." Both Alonso and Kripke reiterated that "anything can happen to anyone," urging viewers to "keep your tissue box close by," hinting at an emotionally impactful, potentially devastating, final season. Capone added that the show's strength lies in giving each character their unique emotional treatment, ensuring that "each and every character this season has definitely made a full circle — or not," leaving a lasting impression on the audience.
