'The Accountant 2' Crosses Global Box Office Milestone In Debut Weekend - mxdwn Movies
Released nine years after the original The Accountant first debuted in 2016 by Warner Bros, the sequel is now owned by Amazon MGM. The film follows Ben Affleck’s titular character, Christian Wolff, an autistic accountant for criminal organizations, who teams up with a Treasury agent and his estranged brother, an assassin, to investigate when an old associate is killed.
Now, the film has opened with a $38 million first weekend gross against a budget of $80 million. The original movie, which was made for $45 million, would gross over $150 million globally. Along with a bigger budget, The Accountant 2 has also received stronger reviews with a 76% Certified Fresh critical score and 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to the original’s 53% Rotten critical score and 77% audience score.
Returning director Gavin O’Connor recently revealed another sequel was in the works, saying,
“We always intended it to be a trilogy, and we’re having conversations [with Amazon], so it will not be another nine years before we do our third one…”
The Accountant 2 reunites O’Connor with actors Ben Affleck, Jon Bernthal, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Allison Robertson, and J. K. Simmons, and is currently in theaters.
UPDATE: The Accountant 2 has grossed $71 million worldwide as of this writing.
