Sammy Gyamfi Faces Probe over Dollar Gift

Following Sammy Gyamfi's controversial dollar gift to Nana Agradaa, the Ghanaian rapper Criss Waddle voiced his support for President John Mahama’s decision to pardon him. Waddle argued that Gyamfi, in his role as CEO of the Ghana Gold Board, has positively influenced the appreciation of the cedi against the dollar, suggesting that Gyamfi should be allowed to continue his work.

The issue arose after a video circulated online showing Gyamfi giving dollars to Agradaa at a public event. President Mahama decided against disciplinary action, with government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu noting that Gyamfi had apologized and been cautioned by the Chief of Staff. Criss Waddle emphasized the positive impact of Gyamfi’s leadership on the economy, highlighting the cedi's appreciation from GHS15-16 to around GHS12.50 against the dollar.

The dollar-gifting event occurred on May 10, 2025, during a funeral observation for Prophet Nigel Gaisie’s father. Gyamfi later explained that his gesture was a regular act of kindness. Agradaa responded to the pardon with gratitude, stating she had prayed for Gyamfi to retain his position and saw the pardon as a divine answer.

Meanwhile, the Minority in Parliament has formally petitioned the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to investigate the alleged dollar-denominated gift. The Minority argues that the gift may constitute a breach of public trust and potential abuse of office, given Gyamfi's role as a senior NDC official and acting Managing Director of the Goldbod.

According to the Minority, the alleged transaction raises ethical and legal concerns due to any financial dealings between a public official and a controversial figure like Agradaa. Gyamfi has denied any financial transactions with Agradaa and welcomes an investigation to clear his name. The CHRAJ, OSP, and IGP have acknowledged the petition and are conducting preliminary assessments. A private citizen who initially filed a petition at CHRAJ withdrew it after the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, cautioned Gyamfi and determined no further action was necessary after his apology.
