Trump: Ukraine Peace Talks Depend on Meeting Putin

Former US President Donald Trump has asserted that progress in the Russia-Ukraine war peace talks hinges on a personal meeting between him and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Speaking to reporters, Trump stated, "Nothing’s going to happen...until he and I get together," underscoring his belief that a face-to-face encounter with Putin is essential to overcome the current impasse.
Trump's remarks coincide with heightened diplomatic tensions, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky voiced strong criticism against Russia for what he perceives as a lack of genuine engagement in the proposed peace talks held in Turkey. Zelensky accused Putin of dispatching mere "stand-in props" rather than personally attending the negotiations, which has further diminished optimism for productive dialogue.
In response to Zelensky's accusations, the Russian foreign ministry issued a vehement rebuke, branding Zelensky a "clown and a loser" in a statement disseminated through Russian media channels. Despite the presence of both Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Turkey, officials in Ankara have indicated that "no meeting is scheduled" at this juncture, thereby casting further uncertainty on the immediate prospects for achieving peace.
Adding complexity to the situation, Trump mentioned his willingness to travel to Turkey to facilitate discussions, though he ultimately did not do so. Instead, Secretary of State Marco Rubio attended. Trump's emphasis on the significance of meeting with Putin contrasts sharply with the approach of former US President Joe Biden, who maintained that Ukraine alone should dictate the terms of its future negotiations.
