Kano NNPP Representatives Defect to APC

Two members of the House of Representatives, Kabiru Usman and Abdullahi Sani, have defected from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Speaker Tajudeen Abbas announced the defections during a plenary session. Usman and Sani represent the Rano/Bunkure/Kibiya and Karaye/Rogo federal constituencies of Kano, respectively. The lawmakers cited internal crisis within the NNPP as the primary reason for their defection.

Oluwole Oke, representing the Oriade/Obokun Federal Constituency in Osun State, also formally joined the APC, leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, and other party officials were present at the House of Representatives to witness the defections. Ganduje's presence underscored the significance of these shifts in political allegiance.

Recent months have seen numerous defections in the House. Chris Nkwonta (Ukwa East/Ukwa West, Abia) left the PDP for the APC on October 2, 2024. Sulaiman Abubakar (Gummi/Bukkuyum, Zamfara) followed suit on October 30. By December 5, four Labour Party lawmakers and one PDP member had also defected to the APC. This trend continued in February and March, with Amos Magaji (Kaduna) and Garba Koko (Kebbi) and Jallo Mohammed (Igabi, Kaduna) and Adamu Tanko (Gurara/Suleja/Tafa, Niger) leaving the PDP for the APC.

On March 27, Clara Nnabuife (Orumba North/South, Anambra) defected from the Young Progressives Party (YPP) to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), citing her being sidelined from party activities. In a more recent event, six PDP members joined the APC, while two Labour Party (LP) legislators moved to the PDP. Obetta Chidi (Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South, Enugu) and Dennis Agbo (Igbo-Eze North/Udenu) defected from the LP to the PDP. Victor Nwokolo (Ika North East/Ika South, Delta), Julius Pondi (Burutu), Thomas Ereyitomi (Warri North/Warri South/Warri West), Nicholas Mutu (Bomadi/Patani), Ukodhiko Jonathan (Isoko North/Isoko South), and Ezechi Nnamdi (Ndokwa/Ukwuani) all defected from the PDP to the APC.

On May 8, three PDP members from Katsina, Abdullahi Balarabe (Bakori/Danja), Abubakar Albaba Aliyu (Batasari/Safana/Dan-Musa), and Yusuf Majigiri (Mashi/Dutsi), also moved to the APC, citing reasons such as the “protracted crisis” in the PDP and a “lack of cohesiveness”. Zubairu Hamza Masu, representing Sumaila Constituency in the Kano State House of Assembly, also defected from the NNPP to the APC, blaming his defection on leadership crisis and factions within the NNPP.

Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin welcomed six NNPP and Kwankwasiyya movement groups to the APC, including Ja’en-Ring Road Kwankwasiyya Elders, Kwankwasiyya Ko Ɗar-Ɗar, Principals Forum, Haske Kwankwasiyya, Millennium Youth Awareness Kwankwasiyya, and Kano Sai Abinda Abba Ya Ce Youth Awareness. The defections, especially to the APC, have significantly depleted the ranks of the opposition.
