Tesla has officially unveiled its long-anticipated, production-ready autonomous vehicle, the Cybercab, nearly two years after its initial announcement. This debut marks a significant milestone, following CEO Elon Musk's 2014 prediction that fully autonomous car technology would be ready within five or six years. The Cybercab represents Tesla's vision for a fully driverless future in urban mobility.

The Tesla Cybercab is an all-electric, two-seat coupe meticulously designed for autonomous operation. Its distinctive features include striking gold plastic body panels and butterfly doors, along with a spacious rear cargo area. A large central touchscreen serves as the primary interface, notably replacing traditional controls as the vehicle completely lacks a steering wheel and any pedals (throttle or brake). Tesla justifies the two-seat configuration by citing data that more than 80 percent of cab rides involve two passengers or fewer.

Designed to function as a robotaxi, the Cybercab will operate autonomously, picking up paying customers through Tesla's dedicated "RoboTaxi" smartphone app. Its service is intended to be geofenced, implying operation within predefined geographical areas. For navigation and control, the Cybercab relies exclusively on cameras, eschewing other sensor types.

During the "Launch Day" debut, key Tesla personnel — lead engineer Eric Earle, head of vehicle software Silvio Brugada, designer Ian Kettle, and Ashok Elluswamy, head of Tesla’s autonomous driving systems — articulated the core principles behind the Cybercab's development. These priorities include achieving maximum efficiency, ensuring low-cost production, and facilitating ease of manufacturing for mass deployment.

Efficiency is paramount in the Cybercab's design, evident in its teardrop shape which Tesla claims results in a drag coefficient under 0.20. If accurate, this would position it among the most aerodynamically efficient vehicles ever produced, potentially rivaling the GM EV1's 0.19 and surpassing the Tesla Model 3's claimed 0.22. Notably, the Cybercab lacks a 'frunk' (front trunk), optimizing the design further for aerodynamic performance.

According to documents filed with the Environmental Protection Agency, the Cybercab is powered by a single, permanent-magnet electric motor that delivers 219 horsepower, driving the front wheels. Tesla asserts this motor is "18 percent smaller, 25 percent lighter, and more efficient than other top-performing electric vehicle drive units." The vehicle is equipped with a 48-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, composed of Tesla’s advanced 4680 cylindrical cells, providing the necessary energy for its autonomous operations.
