Tanzania's Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism is rallying stakeholders to achieve the ambitious target of eight million international tourists by 2030, a goal critical for national income and economic growth. A new Five-Year Strategic Plan outlines priorities, including product diversification and enhanced conservation, aligning with the Tanzania Development Vision 2050.The Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism in Tanzania has issued a crucial call to action, urging all tourism stakeholders to significantly strengthen their collaboration with the government. This concerted effort is vital to realize the ambitious national target of attracting eight million international tourists by the year 2030. Achieving this goal is identified as a critical pathway to substantially increase national income and accelerate the overall economic growth of the country.
This imperative was underscored during a recent stakeholders' consultative meeting held in Dodoma, focusing on the draft of the Five-Year Strategic Plan for the period 2026/27 to 2030/31. During the opening remarks, Deputy Permanent Secretary, Mr Nkoba Mabula, emphasized that such an ambitious target cannot possibly be met without the active and dedicated participation of both public and private sector players. He reiterated his appeal for close cooperation, stating that it is essential for the successful achievement of the 2030 tourist target and its significant contribution to Tanzania's economy. Mr Mabula highlighted that the tourism, wildlife, and antiquities subsectors collectively represent some of the nation's most robust economic pillars, making stakeholder involvement indispensable for the effective implementation of the ministry's planned initiatives and priorities.
Presenting the intricacies of the draft strategic plan, Mr Abdullah Mvungi, the ministry's Director of Policy and Planning, detailed that the document meticulously outlines measurable priorities, comprehensive implementation strategies, and precise performance indicators. These elements are designed to provide clear guidance for the ministry's operations over the next five years. Furthermore, Mr Mvungi clarified that the strategic plan is meticulously aligned with key national directives, including the Tanzania Development Vision 2050, the CCM Election Manifesto 2025, and other overarching government priorities such as the ongoing fight against corruption and HIV/AIDS.
Underpinning this strategic direction, the Tanzania Development Vision 2050 envisions the tourism sector transforming into one of the country's primary engines for economic transformation. This will be achieved through a multi-faceted approach involving increasing tourist arrivals, boosting tourism earnings, and attracting greater investment, all while ensuring the sustainable management of Tanzania's invaluable natural and cultural resources. The vision also strongly advocates for the diversification of tourism products, moving beyond the traditional wildlife safaris to promote cultural, historical, beach, conference, and sports tourism. Concurrently, efforts will be intensified to strengthen digital marketing capabilities, foster innovation, improve tourism infrastructure, enhance environmental conservation initiatives, and attract high-value investments across the sector.
Mr Mvungi further delineated the ministry's specific strategic priorities. These include an intensified promotion of Tanzania's diverse tourist attractions in international markets, a strengthened focus on wildlife conservation efforts, robust protection of cultural heritage and antiquities, increased community participation in vital conservation activities, continuous improvement of tourism services, and the enhancement of institutional capacity within the ministry and related agencies.
Stakeholders who participated in the consultative process expressed their commendation for the ministry's initiative in preparing such a comprehensive strategy. They acknowledged that the plan effectively addresses key priorities essential for the sustainable growth of the tourism, wildlife, and antiquities sectors. In response, they collectively pledged their unwavering commitment to continue working closely with the ministry, ensuring the successful implementation of the plan and the ultimate achievement of its strategic objectives.
Tanzania has consistently demonstrated strong growth in its tourism sector. The government is steadfast in its ambition to strategically position the country among Africa's foremost tourist destinations. This aspiration is being pursued through a concerted strategy encompassing increased investment, enhanced conservation practices, more effective destination marketing, and a continued expansion and diversification of its tourism product offerings.
