Synnefa Bags $300K Grant to Revolutionize Kenyan Agriculture with IoT Solar Tech
Synnefa, a Kenyan agri-tech startup established in 2019 by Stanley Kirui, has recently secured a substantial $300,000 grant from the World Resources Institute’s Partnering for Green Growth and the Global Goals 2030 (P4G) initiative. This significant funding, awarded in collaboration with Solidaridad, is earmarked for the deployment of IoT-powered solar dryers across various regions in Kenya. This innovative approach aims to equip farmers with advanced tools to effectively combat pervasive post-harvest losses and significantly enhance agricultural productivity.
The core mission of Synnefa revolves around developing and implementing smart farming technologies that promote sustainability and efficiency. Its suite of solutions includes Smart Greenhouses, the FarmShield IoT system, FarmCloud for data management, and Smart Solar Dryers. These technologies are designed to facilitate efficient water utilization and foster sustainable agricultural practices. To date, Synnefa has already made a considerable impact, reaching over 7,000 farmers throughout Kenya with its cutting-edge solutions.
A primary objective of the newly acquired grant is to specifically target 800 smallholder farmers in Makueni County. By rolling out IoT-enabled solar dryers to these farmers, Synnefa anticipates a drastic reduction in traditional drying times, transforming a process that typically takes several weeks into a mere two to three days. This acceleration in drying not only improves efficiency but also plays a crucial role in preventing large-scale food waste, a persistent challenge for smallholder farmers. The versatility of this technology is a key advantage, as it can be effectively used for a wide range of crops, including coffee, various fruits, grains, and vegetables, thereby enabling farmers to achieve improved yields and superior product quality.
Furthermore, the integration of real-time IoT monitoring within these solar dryers is designed to optimize solar energy usage and provide precise temperature control. This technological enhancement is critical in assisting farmers to adapt more effectively to the increasing challenges posed by climate change, ensuring more predictable and robust harvests. Synnefa’s commitment to innovation and impact has been recognized previously; it was a recipient of the Google for Startups Black Founders Fund for Africa in 2022, underscoring its potential and past achievements.
Looking ahead, Synnefa has ambitious plans for expansion, aiming to raise $2 million in seed funding by 2026. This capital will be crucial for scaling its operations to reach an impressive 150,000 farmers across the broader East African region. The strategic partnership with the P4G initiative solidifies Synnefa's position as a prominent leader in Africa's burgeoning climate-smart agriculture movement. By seamlessly combining green innovation with digital precision, Synnefa is poised to further empower smallholder farmers, bolster food security, and contribute significantly to sustainable agricultural development across the continent.
