Supporting education for sustainability through online repositories | European School Education Platform

With the platform, the archive for education, meemoo offers teachers and pupils unique access to more than audio-visual clips that are specifically selected based on the curriculum standards in Flanders by in-house teachers.

We also offer inspirational content, audio-visual collections that are ready to use in the classroom and also pre-made assignments that they can easily implement.

I mostly want materials to be engaging so that the pupils are encouraged to engage with the material but also that afterwards they are activated or inspired to participate in the real world based on the materials we have seen or the lessons we have learned, ideally a combination of video, audio, text so that the pupils have different opportunities and different ways to learn the materials.

Sustainability is a very important topic on our platform because it's included in several courses and subjects in schools. We also have workshops on sustainable development education and how you can teach this in the classroom using the audio-visual content on our platform.

The good thing about sustainability education is that there are just very great resources about it, for example the SDGs.be website is very clear, very usable, and if I'm in any doubt, I can just check against that.

For example, you can work with them around the first SDG about eliminating poverty in the world and so the pupils can search around that theme both past videos and present videos, compare what steps, for example, the Belgian government has taken in the past to eliminate poverty. Have those steps been done? Has the effect been achieved? What further steps can be done?

KlasCement is an online platform where education professionals and organisations can find each other and exchange teaching materials. KlasCement supports teachers by offering sustainable educational materials. This covers a broad spectrum, including among other things climate change, ecology, social inequality and gender neutrality, so that teachers and pupils can gain a broad picture of how sustainable development works.

I work with students from to year olds and it's easy to find material that is a bit too complex. So, a certain simplicity is essential, but also not too simple - there's a balance there. It streamlines the process because once I have the material created on my laptop, I can instantly send it to my pupils and I'm sure they will get it. In the old school system, I'd go to print something, but I'd need to be sure that the printer works, that there's ink in it, that there's paper, that there's no queue, that I'm on time here. I think the most important aspect of an online tool to use in class is ease of use for teachers and students.

Also language-wise, having the material available in multiple languages is definitely a plus. For example, a student might not be good in English or Flemish, and then being able to read the same material in French can help them understand the exercise better.

Online tools also ensure deep engagement for students, with educational videos, simulations and that sort of thing, so that they can really empathise with sustainability issues. Online resources also offer teachers an easy-to-use tool. They can easily adapt and distribute the teaching materials to their pupils, and also easily share them with fellow teachers.

Schools and teachers play a central role in KlasCement, and they deliver the teaching materials in the classroom and to the students. Teachers also contribute to the growth of KlasCement: they can upload learning materials themselves, give scores, or recommend learning materials to fellow teachers by tagging them.
