Super Falcons Dominate: Nigeria Clinches Record 10th WAFCON Title!

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have achieved a monumental feat, securing their record-extending 10th Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title following a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over host nation Morocco in the final. The thrilling showdown, dubbed 'Mission X' by some, unfolded at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, igniting nationwide celebrations and drawing praise from prominent Nigerian figures.

The final match itself was a testament to the Super Falcons' resilience and indomitable spirit. Morocco, playing on home turf, quickly took a two-goal lead in the first half with goals from Ghiziane Chebbak in the 13th minute and Sanaa Mssoudy in the 24th minute. Despite trailing by two goals at halftime, the Super Falcons, after tactical changes made by head coach Justin Madugu, initiated a spectacular second-half resurgence. Esther Okoronkwo played a pivotal role, converting a penalty in the 64th minute to pull one back. She then assisted Folashade Ijamilusi for the equalizer in the 71st minute. The decisive moment came in the 88th minute when Okoronkwo once again set up Jennifer Echegini, who scored the winning goal, sealing Nigeria's historic victory. Legendary striker Asisat Oshoala was also introduced to help close out the game.

Following the triumph, reactions poured in from across Nigeria. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu quickly joined the celebrations, posting on social media, "Congratulations to our incredible Super Falcons on their well-deserved WAFCON victory. This win is a reminder of what can happen when talent, discipline, and belief come together." He further lauded their "flawless 10 out of 10 performance," expressing immense national pride.

Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, also extended her heartfelt congratulations, praising the team's resilience. In a social media post, she highlighted the victory as "not just another trophy; it is a testament to your hard work, consistency, and the indomitable Nigerian spirit." She declared the Super Falcons as "Queens of African football," inspiring millions.

The NFF President, Ibrahim Gusau, was visibly emotional after the match, hailing the victory as symbolic of the Nigerian spirit. He stated, "Our girls rose from the ‘dead’, as they say, and fought to victory. This was an extraordinary performance. I congratulate them for their resilience, doggedness, patriotism, and the blatant display of the well-known Nigerian spirit." Gusau expressed hope that this monumental win would inspire the men’s national team, the Super Eagles, in their upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, especially as they prepare for crucial matches against Rwanda and South Africa in September.

Super Falcons defender Michelle Alozie added a touch of playful defiance to the celebrations. Throughout the tense final, Moroccan fans controversially shone laser lights onto Nigerian players, notably targeting Esther Okoronkwo. In a witty post-match troll on Snapchat, Alozie celebrated alongside Okoronkwo with the caption, "Their lasers didn’t work," perfectly encapsulating the team's unwavering composure despite the hostile environment. Additionally, striker Asisat Oshoala credited teammates Oluwatosin Demehin and Deborah Abiodun for their significant roles in her WAFCON journey, posting, "Can’t tell my Mission X story without these two." The Super Falcons have once again cemented their status as African champions, overcoming all challenges to achieve this historic victory.
