Super Falcons Conquer Africa! Nigerian Legends Seal 10th WAFCON Title in Historic Fashion

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have etched their name in history, clinching their record-extending 10th Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title. This monumental achievement, dubbed "Mission X," came after a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory against host nation Morocco in the final, a testament to the team's unwavering resilience and indomitable spirit.

The final, held at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, saw Morocco take an early lead with goals from Ghiziane Chebbak in the 13th minute and Sanaa Mssoudy in the 24th minute, putting Nigeria behind by two goals at halftime. However, the Super Falcons, under head coach Justin Madugu, orchestrated a dramatic second-half resurgence. Esther Okoronkwo initiated the comeback by converting a penalty in the 64th minute. She then provided a crucial assist for Folashade Ijamilusi's equalizer in the 71st minute. Okoronkwo's stellar performance culminated in another assist, setting up Jennifer Echegini for the match-winning goal in the 88th minute, sealing the historic triumph. Legendary striker Asisat Oshoala, who was introduced later in the game, highlighted the important roles played by teammates Oluwatosin Demehin and Deborah Abiodun in the team's journey.

The victory sparked nationwide celebrations and drew commendations from prominent figures. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in a heartfelt social media post, congratulated the Super Falcons, stating, "This win is a reminder of what can happen when talent, discipline, and belief come together." He praised their "flawless 10 out of 10 performance," emphasizing that they had made the country proud once again. Similarly, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, celebrated the team's resilience and consistency, hailing them as "ambassadors of Nigerian excellence" and the "Queens of African football." She affirmed that the victory was "not just another trophy; it is a testament to your hard work, consistency, and the indomitable Nigerian spirit."

Beyond the immediate celebrations, the WAFCON victory has significant implications. Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Ibrahim Gusau expressed confidence that the Super Falcons' success would ignite and fuel the Super Eagles' 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. The men's national team is set to resume their qualifiers with a home game against Rwanda on September 6, followed by a high-stakes clash against South Africa on September 9, hoping to draw inspiration from their female counterparts' remarkable comeback.

The Super Falcons' dominant performance also brought attention to broader issues in women's football. Defender Michelle Alozie playfully trolled Moroccan supporters on Snapchat, posting a video with Esther Okoronkwo and the cheeky caption, "Their lasers didn’t work," referencing the laser lights aimed at Nigerian players during the match. Furthermore, football analyst Joba challenged FIFA's women's national team ranking system. Despite their continental glory and an unbeaten run, Nigeria remained ranked 36th globally (though first in Africa) in the latest FIFA Women’s World Rankings. Joba argued that there are not 35 teams in the world better than the Super Falcons, urging FIFA to revamp its calculation methods to better reflect emerging power shifts and reward breakthrough performances in women's football.
