Super Eagles Strikers Struck Down: Osimhen Ruled Out, Another Star Suffers Injury Blow
Nigerian Super Eagles strikers Victor Osimhen and Paul Onuachu are both sidelined with muscle injuries, just weeks before crucial 2027 AFCON qualifiers. Osimhen's serious groin injury rules him out of upcoming matches, while Onuachu's injury, sustained after scoring two goals for Trabzonspor, further complicates Nigeria's attacking options.
Nigerian football fans face a significant blow as two prominent Super Eagles strikers, Victor Osimhen and Paul Onuachu, have both been sidelined with muscle injuries, just weeks before crucial 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Their absences pose challenges for their respective clubs and, more critically, for the Nigerian national team.
Victor Osimhen's injury was confirmed by his club, Galatasaray, who announced the 27-year-old is dealing with a serious groin injury, described as a "moderate to advanced level strain with bleeding in the right groin area." He picked up the injury after scoring the opening goal in Galatasaray's thrilling 3-2 victory against Istanbul Basaksehir. Osimhen is expected to be out for three weeks, ruling him out of Nigeria's opening AFCON 2027 qualification matches. These include a home fixture against Madagascar on September 25 and an away clash with Guinea-Bissau four days later. The Super Eagles are placed in Group L alongside Madagascar, Guinea-Bissau, and co-hosts Tanzania, with only the highest-ranked team (excluding automatically qualified Tanzania) advancing. Osimhen's absence is particularly impactful as he has been a central figure for the Super Eagles, providing crucial goals and a strong physical presence that will be difficult to replace as Nigeria embarks on a new qualification campaign following their failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Coach Eric Chelle will now be forced to explore alternative attacking options for these vital encounters.
Adding to Nigeria's woes, Paul Onuachu, known for his imposing 2.01-meter (6 ft 7 in) frame, also suffered a muscle injury while playing for Trabzonspor in their Süper Lig game against Gençlerbirliği. The night was bittersweet for Onuachu, who had ended a ten-game goal drought by scoring two goals within the opening 22 minutes of the match, contributing significantly to Trabzonspor's eventual 5-0 victory. However, he was forced off in the 44th minute due to the injury and is now set for a spell on the sidelines, likely for a few weeks. For Trabzonspor, his absence comes at a time when they have recently signed Franculino Djú, who will now have an opportunity to stake his claim for a starting spot. The club is believed to have sufficient cover in attack to manage until Onuachu's return.
The timing of these injuries is particularly unfortunate for the Super Eagles. With the international break just three weeks away, coach Chelle will be without Osimhen, a significant blow to the team's offensive firepower. While Onuachu's recent form hadn't cemented his place as an obvious replacement for Osimhen, especially with other in-form strikers like Cyriel Dessers, Tolu Arokodare, Kelechi Iheanacho, and Rafiu Durosinmi firing on all cylinders, his injury still reduces Chelle's options. Both players will be hoping for swift recoveries, though Osimhen is expected to return after the international break, while Onuachu's return timeline is still unclear.
