Streaming Phenomenon: The Year's Biggest Fantasy Blockbuster You Haven't Heard Of

An unexpected blockbuster fantasy epic, "Kantara: A Legend — Chapter 1," has emerged as a global sensation, despite its origins as an Indian Kannada-language film. Released theatrically earlier this year, it swiftly became India's biggest box office hit of 2025 and has subsequently dominated Prime Video's global charts, surpassing even major Hollywood productions.

This new film serves as a highly anticipated prequel to the 2022 word-of-mouth phenomenon, "Kantara." The original film, set in the lush forests of the southern Indian region of Karnataka, captivated audiences by exploring ancient traditions and mystical customs previously unknown to many, even within India. This cultural immersion and the unique storytelling created immense anticipation for director-star Rishab Shetty's follow-up project.

"Kantara: A Legend" delves deeper into the mystical world, telling the origin story of the sacred ritual depicted in the first film—a ritual that mysteriously caused men to vanish into a forest circle. The prequel introduces powerful gods and goddesses known as "daivas," who manifest before the protagonist. Its profound themes of environmentalism, the protection of cultural identity, and the importance of staying true to one's roots draw comparisons to esteemed works like James Cameron's "Avatar" series.

The film's impact is evident in its remarkable commercial success. "Kantara: A Legend" grossed over $100 million at the global box office, more than doubling the $40 million lifetime haul of its mini-budget predecessor. This financial triumph allowed it to outperform several Hollywood releases on the 2025 global box office charts, including Jason Statham's "A Working Man," Rami Malek's "The Amateur," and the Colleen Hoover adaptation "Regretting You." Its home video debut on Prime Video further solidified its global reach, securing top 10 spots on the streaming giant's worldwide charts, a feat that overshadowed releases like Netflix's "The Witcher" season four.

Critically, the film has been well-received, holding an 85% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a robust 92% audience score. The critical consensus praises it as "A spectacularly bold action epic rooted in folklore, Kantara: A Legend – Chapter 1 is an extraordinary feat of world-building that may have soared even higher with a tighter narrative focus." Audiences can now experience this epic in multiple Indian languages, including its original Kannada, on Prime Video.
