Storm Alert! Damaging Winds and Rain Threaten South Africa

Today's weather across South Africa’s nine provinces presents a diverse range of conditions, accompanied by crucial updates on temperature, UVB forecasts, and general provincial facts. Residents can expect varying degrees of cloud cover, temperatures from cool to very hot, and scattered to isolated showers and thundershowers across the country. Understanding these forecasts is essential for daily planning, alongside knowing key demographic and geographical details for each region.
Gauteng, despite being the smallest province by area at 18,178 square kilometres, is the most populous with an estimated 16 million inhabitants as per the 2020 census. Its administrative capital is Johannesburg. The province expects partly cloudy and warm conditions with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers, and a High UVB Sunburn Index.
Mpumalanga, the second smallest province spanning 76,495 square kilometres, ranks as the sixth most populous with 4.7 million inhabitants (2020 census). Its capital is Mbombela (formerly Nelspruit). Weather conditions include morning fog patches over the Highveld, followed by cloudy and cool to warm temperatures with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers.
Limpopo, the fifth largest province at 125,754 square kilometres, is also the fifth most populous with 5.9 million inhabitants (2020 census). Polokwane serves as its capital and largest city. The province will experience morning fog patches over central parts, then cloudy and warm conditions with isolated showers and thundershowers, becoming scattered in the south.
The North West province covers 104,882 square kilometres, making it the sixth largest. With 4.2 million inhabitants (2020 census), it is the seventh most populous. Mahikeng (formerly Mafikeng) is its capital. Weather-wise, morning fog patches are expected in the east, leading to partly cloudy and warm conditions with isolated showers and thundershowers in the extreme east.
The Free State is the third largest province by area, at 129,825 square kilometres, but the second smallest in terms of population, with approximately 2.9 million inhabitants (2020 census). Its capital, Bloemfontein, is also South Africa’s judicial capital. Similar to the North West, it anticipates morning fog patches in the east, followed by partly cloudy and warm weather with isolated showers and thundershowers in the extreme east.
The Northern Cape stands as the largest province at 372,889 square kilometres, yet it is the smallest by population, with an estimated 1.3 million inhabitants (2020 census). Kimberley is its capital. Weather forecasts predict cloudy conditions along the coast and adjacent interior in the morning with fog patches, then partly cloudy and warm to hot with isolated to scattered afternoon showers and thundershowers over the central interior. It will be windy over the western interior with moderate north-westerly winds along the coast. A Yellow level 1 warning for damaging winds is in effect for the southeastern parts, and extremely high fire danger conditions are expected over the central parts.
The Western Cape is the fourth largest province, spanning 129,449 square kilometres, and the third most populous with 7.2 million inhabitants (2020 census). Cape Town is its capital. The forecast includes cloudy conditions over western and south-western parts with morning fog. Otherwise, it will be partly cloudy and cool to warm with isolated afternoon showers and thundershowers in the east, becoming scattered in the north-east where it will be hot to very hot. A chance of light rain is expected over the south-western parts in the evening. Winds along the coast will be moderate to fresh northerly to north-westerly, reaching strong along the south-west coast, and moderate to fresh easterly along the south coast. A Very High UVB Sunburn Index is anticipated.
The Eastern Cape is the second largest province at 168,966 square kilometres and the fourth biggest in population with 6.7 million inhabitants (2020 census). Bhisho serves as its capital. The western half of the province expects partly cloudy and warm to hot weather with isolated showers and thundershowers, except in the extreme east, with moderate to fresh easterly winds becoming strong from mid-afternoon along the coast. The eastern half will be partly cloudy and warm to hot, with moderate south-westerly winds at first, becoming moderate to fresh easterly, then northeasterly in the afternoon along the coast.
Lastly, KwaZulu-Natal, the seventh largest province at 94,361 square kilometres, is the second most populous with 11.5 million inhabitants (2020 census). Pietermaritzburg is its capital. Morning fog patches are expected over the interior, followed by partly cloudy and warm to hot conditions with isolated showers and thundershowers.
