Stop using car air con - doctor's scientific method cools down motor in seconds - Leeds Live

Published 2 days ago3 minute read

A third heatwave of the summer is bound to hit the UK, with temperatures reaching upwards of 33C in some parts of the country. So it's important to know the best ways to keep you and your loved ones safe and healthy.

The NHS has issued advice on how to cope in the heat, which includes avoiding being out in the sun between 11am and 3pm when rays are at their most intense. You should also make sure to wear sunscreen and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Try to keep your living space as cool as possible, which can be done keeping your windows and curtains closed during the day and using electric fans inside.

And when it comes to your car, there is advice you should follow too. A woman named Hannah Fry has taken to social media to share her ultimate hack on how to cool down the inside of your car in seconds by using a simple scientific method.

"You know that thing when you get into your car in the summer and it's absolutely boiling hot," she said at the start of the video. "There's actually a fluid dynamics trick that you can use to quickly cool your car down.

"That's what my PhD is in, fluid dynamics. And this is the trick I continue to use. So don't bother putting on the air con, that would take about five minutes, it's not worth it."

The doctor of science continued: "Instead, you open one of the windows on the opposite side of the [driver seat], the back window now open. Then what you do is you very quickly - I mean you do look a bit like an idiot if you do this - but you just very quickly open and close the driver's door."

To demonstrate, she opened and closed the car door quickly three times in a row before getting back into the car. The TikToker then went on to explain the science behind her method.

Hannah said that by opening the door outwards, it sweeps all the air that's in its way, creating a low area of pressure between the driver seat and the door. This sets up something called bulk flow, where all the hot air inside the car is drawn outwards.

"And the only way to refill it is with nice, fresh, easy air from over that side," she said as she pointed to the open window in the backseat.

She went on to say: "It only takes about two or three goes and suddenly it's absolutely beautifully temperature."

Viewers were amazed at Hannah's tips, and they soon took to the comments to share their thoughts. One person wrote: "My car a/c doesn't work and i'm from a tropical island so i will definitely be trying this - i already look like an idiot, this changes nothing."

Another said: "Been doing this for 20 years with the blind belief that it’s better than just opening all the windows. Thanks for the scientific pardon."

And a third added: "Delivery driver here, thank you for going to college for this, I’m doing it from now on. It makes so much sense. Please keep sciencing."
