Starmer Intensifies Pressure on Prince Andrew: Testify in US Epstein Probe!

Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is facing intensified pressure to cooperate with a US congressional investigation into Jeffrey Epstein, following renewed calls from UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and the public release of additional information. Starmer stated that anyone with relevant information in child sexual offence cases should disclose it, a principle he believes applies to Andrew, who was stripped of his royal titles last month amidst allegations of sexually assaulting Virginia Giuffre, claims he denies.
Sir Keir’s comments came after Andrew failed to respond to an interview request from the US House oversight committee by a 20 November deadline. Breaking the long-standing convention that Prime Ministers do not comment on royal matters, Starmer, speaking at the G20 summit, reiterated his general position: "if you have relevant information you should be prepared to share it." While acknowledging it was "a decision for him," his intervention has significantly increased the scrutiny on the former prince.
The US House oversight committee is conducting an inquiry into Epstein, who died in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges. As part of this investigation, Democratic members Robert Garcia and Suhas Subramanyam had specifically requested an interview with Andrew. His silence prompted an angry response from the committee members, with Garcia and Subramanyam stating that Andrew’s "silence speaks volumes" and that he "continues to hide." They affirmed the committee’s commitment to holding anyone involved in these crimes accountable, irrespective of their wealth or status, to achieve justice for survivors.
Despite the strong calls from Democrats, compelling Mountbatten-Windsor to testify without the backing of Republican leadership, who chair the committee, remains challenging. James Comer, the Republican chair, has not yet indicated whether he would seek to force Andrew to testify. The subject of Epstein remains sensitive for the Republican party, partly due to President Donald Trump’s past involvement. However, Trump recently signed the Epstein Files Transparency Act into law, compelling the Attorney General to release related documents within 30 days, a move that followed fury from victims and his own Republican backers.
Prominent US lawyers representing Epstein’s victims have strongly welcomed Starmer’s stance and urged Andrew to come forward. Gloria Allred questioned Andrew’s resistance to helping an investigation crucial to victims, while David Boies, who represented Virginia Giuffre, asserted that Andrew "certainly has relevant information" and an "opportunity for him to take some responsibility." Lisa Bloom, another victims' lawyer, thanked Starmer for stating the obvious necessity for anyone with information to assist in bringing complicit individuals to justice.
Further developments include revelations from newly released emails suggesting Andrew spent "hours in a room" with one of Epstein’s victims. Additionally, Metropolitan Police detectives are reportedly examining the posthumous memoirs of Ms. Giuffre. Andrew’s former wife, Sarah Ferguson, is also reportedly considering offers from US broadcasters for a tell-all TV interview, a move that could cause further embarrassment to the Royal Family. It has also been reported that Andrew and Sarah Ferguson are no longer welcome at their favoured private nightclub, Annabel’s.
Sir Keir Starmer’s outspoken comments have not been without internal political context, with some suggesting they might serve to divert attention from his own mounting political troubles. Recent polling among Labour members indicated significant discontent with Starmer’s leadership, with more than half desiring a new leader before the next general election and several prominent Labour figures polling ahead of him in hypothetical head-to-head contests. Nonetheless, Congressman Subramanyam explicitly welcomed Starmer’s intervention, viewing it as an opportunity for Andrew to clear his name and deliver long-awaited justice to victims.
