Star Wars should bring back Commander Cody (especially after where his story ended)

Published 9 hours ago4 minute read

Lately, I've been revisiting The Bad Batch season 2, as it's my favorite season of the show. This dive brought me to episode 3, "The Solitary Clone," where the audience catches up with Crosshair, the member of Clone Force 99 who chose to stay with the Empire.

It's an incredible episode, portraying a skewed version of The Clone Wars, where our supposed heroes invade the Separatist world of Desix to fight battle droids and save the day. Only, the clones are the bad guys here, and one person with Crosshair realizes that: Commander Cody was the commanding officer for the mission.

At the end of the episode, Crosshair finds out that Cody goes AWOL... and that's the last we ever hear from him. In the current canon, this is his final entry. Star Wars Legends has a different fate for Cody, but for today, let's just focus on the current canon. Ever since this episode, fans have wondered where we might see this clone commander again.

Force knows I've had my criticisms about the final season of The Bad Batch, and one of the biggest questions is why the show, which closes out the clone story that George Lucas started, didn't resolve what happened to Cody. There are a few possible reasons the creators chose to leave this character's story open-ended.

For one, Cody isn't just any clone. He is the clone from the movies. If a casual Star Wars fan were going to recognize a clone, it would be the only one who showed his face in Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. Cody was created by George Lucas, granted, so were all the clones like Captain Rex. However, the movies will always carry more weight than any other property in Star Wars. Movie characters have different importance to them. I understand if there were nerves about giving Cody a definitive ending story.

The animators could also have future plans for Cody in another series. The Bad Batch ends with Echo leaving the team to fight in the Rebellion with Rex. The rest of the group stays on the island planet of Pabu, where they build a home. Since the finale, fans have speculated if there would be another clone show coming from Star Wars Animation, focusing on Rex and Echo. This would be a good place for Cody to pop up. Not yet, though, as the next series is Maul - Shadow Lord. Also, Tales of the Underworld was absolutely a backdoor pilot for a possible Asajj Ventress show. So, a clone rebellion show will probably have to wait.

Which I'm happy about, because the death grip The Clone Wars has on Lucasfilm Animation is horrible, but that's another article for another day...

The creators could have also left the door open for other creators to use Cody, as we have learned there were plans for him in other series. Obi-Wan Kenobi writer Stuart Beattie revealed in an interview that Cody was originally a character for the live-action series. The clone would have been driven by the guilt of Order 66 to protect his once Jedi general, and "bickering like this old married couple." Kenobi was in development around the same time as The Bad Batch's second season, so more than likely, there was a possibility they were aware of Cody's use in Kenobi, keeping his ending open.

So, when might we see Commander Cody again in Star Wars? Right now, it's unclear. He could always turn up in a comic or book. With a new book all about Clone Force 99 called Star Wars: Sanctuary — A Bad Batch Novel coming soon, there's always the possibility Cody could pop up there. However, the novel is focused on the Batch protecting their island home of Pabu, so I doubt Cody will get more than a mention.

For now, we'll have to wait and see when this fan favorite clone appears again. Until then, I'm going to keep enjoying my rewatch of The Bad Batch until Commander Cody graces the screen once again.
