Springbok Sensation Kolbe Set for Blockbuster Return: Stormers Seal Shocking Heist

Springbok wing Cheslin Kolbe is set to make a highly anticipated return to the Stormers in Cape Town by July 1, in a complex multi-party deal facilitated primarily by his commercial partner, SportyBet. The move sees the two-time World Cup winner returning to his roots as part of director of rugby John Dobson’s long-term “Project 2029” blueprint for the Cape side. While an official announcement is awaited, reputable reports indicate Kolbe will link up with the Stormers once he completes his Top League commitments with Japanese club Tokyo Suntory Sungoliath.
The deal was intricate due to the Stormers' strict financial policies under their new ownership, which meant the franchise was only prepared to offer Kolbe a standard contract. This created a significant financial gap, as Kolbe had recently extended his contract with Tokyo Suntory Sungoliath until the end of the 2026/27 season, requiring a substantial buyout fee to secure his release.
Roc Nation Sports International (RNSI), Kolbe’s agency, played a pivotal role in bridging this gap. Unable to extract more funds from the Stormers, RNSI approached Kolbe’s commercial partners. International sports betting platform SportyBet, with whom Kolbe had recently become a global ambassador, stepped forward as a willing backer, providing a substantial transfer fee to bring the celebrated winger back to Cape Town. Additionally, SA Rugby’s Players of National Interest funding structure contributed to the final financial package, but SportyBet’s intervention is largely credited for making the transfer a reality.
Kolbe's signing provides a significant boost for Dobson’s squad, filling a pressing need out wide. The Stormers are set to lose Dylan Maart, who will move to the Bulls from Griquas after the Currie Cup, leaving Leolin Zas and Suleiman Hartzenberg as the primary wing options. Kolbe represents the third high-profile Test player scheduled to join the Stormers in July, following the arrival of Springbok captain Siya Kolisi from the Sharks and powerful tighthead prop Wilco Louw from the Bulls, once he completes his URC commitments.
John Dobson has openly discussed his desire to integrate Kolbe into “Project 2029,” which focuses on securing key talent for the future. The Stormers have already tied down promising players such as Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Paul de Villiers, André-Hugo Venter, Olly Reid, and Jurie Matthee to long-term deals, underscoring the franchise's commitment to building a formidable team for the coming years. Kolbe's role as a SportyBet ambassador, a partnership confirmed earlier this year, further highlights the intersection of sports and commercial backing in modern rugby.
