Telangana toddy adulteration: Death toll rises to 7; over 20 still hospitalised

HYDERABAD: The death toll in the suspected toddy adulteration case rose to seven after another patient died at Gandhi Hospital on Monday. According to the doctors, the deceased was identified as Putti Gangamani (40), a resident of Hydernagar.

She succumbed to kidney failure.At least 39 patients, who consumed the spiked drink from areas in and around Kukatpally depots were admitted to two hospitals, with 11 of them discharged on Monday. Of these, 16 were admitted to Gandhi Hospital. While three have left against the medical advice of doctors, four others were discharged on Monday. According to officials, a couple from Nizamabad, who came to the city to visit their daughter at Gajularamam, was also rushed to a private hospital in Kukatpally on Monday on suspicion of consuming adulterated toddy.

However, they were declared fit after checkups.

"The couple - Lachiram and Sakribai - regularly consume toddy in their hometown. When they came to the city, they drank toddy from a nearby compound in Ram Reddy Nagar. On Monday, they experienced low blood pressure, diarrhea, and vomiting, so they were taken to a hospital. They were later declared fine," said a police official.Meanwhile, at least 23 patients are undergoing treatment at Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences. "Of them, the health condition of two patients is said to be critical. Seven people are clinically stable and they were discharged on Monday," said a nephrologist from NIMS.
