Spain Wins U19 World Cup 2023

Spain emerged victorious at the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup 2023, securing their second junior global title. The tournament was filled with memorable performances and marked by an all-European final where Spain triumphed over France in overtime, adding to their previous win in 1999. Türkiye achieved their first-ever victory against the United States, clinching third place and completing an all-European podium, reminiscent of 2011. This also marked the first time since 2011 that the USA did not secure a medal, finishing fifth.

The final standings were: 1. Spain (7-0), 2. France (5-2), 3. Türkiye (6-1), 4. USA (5-2), 5. Argentina (4-3), 6. Serbia (5-2), 7. Canada (3-4), 8. Japan (2-5), 9. Slovenia (5-2), 10. China (2-5), 11. Brazil (4-3), 12. Korea (1-6), 13. Egypt (2-5), 14. Madagascar (2-5), 15. Lebanon (1-6), and 16. Hungary (2-5).

The tournament was hosted in Debrecen, Hungary, as part of FIBA's multi-year hosting model. This city had previously hosted the FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup 2021 and FIBA U17 Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022. Among the sixteen teams, Hungary and Madagascar were debutants. Japan made consecutive appearances for the first time, Slovenia returned after 2003, Lebanon after 16 years, Brazil after 2013, and Egypt after missing two editions.

The teams were divided into four groups, with all advancing to the knockout phase. Spain, USA, Serbia, and Türkiye were undefeated in group play. Hungary surprised by beating Korea and Argentina to finish second in Group D. Highlights included Spain's victory over France and Slovenia nearly defeating the USA. In the Round of 16, Spain set a U19 record by allowing only 20 points against Lebanon, while Hungary's journey was ended by Japan.

The Quarter-Finals saw dominant performances from Spain, Türkiye, France, and the USA. Spain set another record by allowing only 47 points against Argentina, marking the fewest points allowed in a Quarter-Finals game. The Semi-Finals featured Spain defeating Türkiye and France securing their first victory over the USA in a youth world event.

In the Third-Place Game, Türkiye defeated the USA, achieving their first-ever win against the Americans. The Final was a closely contested match between Spain and France, going into overtime, where Spain ultimately prevailed 73-69 to claim the title.

Izan Almansa was named MVP, having previously won the award at the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup 2022 and FIBA U18 EuroBasket 2022. He averaged 16.9 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 1.7 steals. He was joined in the All-Star Five by Jordi Rodriguez, Zacharie Perrin, Berke Buyuktuncel, and Mark Armstrong.

The Final was a thrilling contest between Spain and France. Despite France leading at times, Spain's defense and key plays tied the game, leading to overtime. Spain secured the win with clutch free throws. Rodriguez scored 18 points for Spain, while Ajinca led France with 21 points.

Türkiye's victory over the USA for third place was a significant achievement, marking their first win against the Americans in FIBA competition. Tan Yildizoglu scored 20 points, and Berke Buyuktuncel added 19 points in the 84-70 win.

France continued to develop elite talent, with Zaccharie Risacher following Victor Wembanyama's path from U19 World Cup silver medalist to No. 1 NBA draft pick. Risacher, despite a slow start, averaged 7.4 points and was later drafted first overall by the Atlanta Hawks. Alex Sarr, another tournament participant, was drafted second overall by the Washington Wizards.

Mathias M'Madi of Madagascar was the tournament's leading scorer, averaging 24.1 points per game. He scored a high of 34 points against Lebanon. Zacharie Perrin of France led in rebounds with 10.9 per game, while Alexandre Bouzidi of France led in assists with 5.9 per game.
