Soweto Derby Drama: Pirates vs Chiefs Clash Sees Kick-Off Change, Star Player Doubt

The highly anticipated Soweto derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, set for this weekend, has officially sold out, ensuring another packed FNB Stadium for South Africa’s premier football fixture. This upcoming clash extends a tradition of sell-out events for the fierce rivals, following their previous encounter in February, which also saw a full stadium as Orlando Pirates secured a decisive 3-0 victory over Kaizer Chiefs.
Rescheduled from its original Saturday slot, the match will now take place on Sunday, 26 April, with kick-off at 15:00 at the iconic FNB Stadium. This adjustment was made due to logistical considerations around the Nasrec precinct, a move that is expected to favour travelling supporters, as Freedom Day falls on the subsequent Monday, 27 April, providing a long weekend for fans.
This encounter marks the 185th official meeting between the two Soweto giants, deepening one of African football’s most storied and historic rivalries. Beyond the usual bragging rights, both teams have significant objectives riding on the outcome of this pivotal match.
For Orlando Pirates, the derby is crucial in their ongoing “ding-dong battle” for the Betway Premiership title. The Buccaneers currently sit two log points ahead of perennial winners Mamelodi Sundowns, though Sundowns hold the advantage of two games in hand. Consequently, any dropped points in this derby could hand a significant title advantage to the Brazilians, making a win imperative for Pirates to maintain their push. The team will be desperate to replicate their dominant 3-0 success against Chiefs from earlier in the season.
Kaizer Chiefs, while out of the league title race, have plenty to play for. They are fiercely contesting to consolidate third place in the Betway Premiership, a position that would secure them a coveted spot in the CAF Confederation Cup for the upcoming season. Furthermore, the Amakhosi are also looking to play the role of spoilers, as they are still set to face both Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns in their remaining fixtures. A victory in this derby would not only earn them crucial points but also serve as a powerful statement about their progress this season.
In terms of team news for Orlando Pirates, there is concern regarding the availability of striker Evidence Makgopa. The 25-year-old has a strong derby record, having netted in his last three appearances against Kaizer Chiefs. However, he has not featured in recent Buccaneers matches due to an injury and remains doubtful for Sunday's anticipated clash. The club has indicated that Makgopa still needs more time, possibly a full 90 minutes, to regain full match fitness.
In Makgopa’s recent absence, coach Abdeslam Ouaddou made a technical decision to give Boitumelo Radiopane an opportunity, particularly in the match against AmaZulu where Makgopa was not on the bench. Ouaddou explained that Radiopane had been working hard for a long time to return, performing well and scoring in a game against All Stars before the AFCON break. This decision was part of carefully managing the squad, building Radiopane's confidence, and helping him reintegrate after a long absence, showing that the technical staff believes in his capabilities and aims to keep the team's strikers competitive.
Orlando Pirates come into this derby in strong form, having recently leapfrogged Mamelodi Sundowns to the top of the log following an enthralling weekend in the Betway Premiership. The Buccaneers capitalized on Sundowns' absence from league action, securing a convincing 3-0 win against AmaZulu at the Orlando Amstel Arena with goals from Yanela Mbuthuma, Oswin Appollis, and Relebohile Mofokeng. This victory allowed Pirates to reclaim top spot by two points, albeit momentarily, given the Brazilians' two games in hand.
