South C Disaster Unfolds: Families Plead for Rescues as Collapse Investigation Demanded

A 14-storey building in Nairobi's South C estate experienced a complete pancake-type collapse on January 2, 2026, at approximately 4:05 a.m., sparking immediate rescue efforts and widespread concern. Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku initially addressed media reports suggesting four people were trapped, clarifying after reviewing CCTV footage that only two individuals are suspected to be trapped inside the debris. Rescue operations, which commenced immediately after the incident on Friday morning, have been ongoing with multi-agency teams working tirelessly.
The two men believed to be trapped have been identified as security guards Ali Adan Galgallo and Hassan Bulleh Huqa, both in their late twenties. They are members of the Gabra community from Moyale, married, and each have three children. Family members and community leaders, some traveling from Moyale, have remained at the scene in deep anguish, appealing to authorities to intensify rescue efforts and provide timely, honest information. Dr. Roba Dubasharamo expressed the families' greatest concern for the men's survival, while Marsabit Senator Mohamed Said Chute and Marsabit County Assembly Speaker Edin Wario Dida urged for faster action, additional equipment like cranes, and reassurance for the crying wives and relatives.
