Sony Taps 'Paddington' Director & 'Dear Evan Hansen' Writer for Hot New 'Labubu' Movie

The highly anticipated “Labubu” movie, a collaborative effort between Pop Mart and Sony Pictures, has officially announced its key creative team, promising to bring the beloved global phenomenon to the big screen as a live-action and CGI hybrid. This exciting project, currently in early development, aims to captivate audiences by translating the whimsical world of Labubu into a cinematic experience.
At the helm of this venture is BAFTA-nominated director Paul King, renowned for his work on acclaimed films like “Wonka” and “Paddington.” King will not only produce and direct the film but will also co-write the screenplay alongside the accomplished Steven Levenson. Levenson brings a wealth of experience and accolades, including nominations for a Tony Award for “Dear Evan Hansen,” a WGA Award for “Tick Tick … Boom!,” and an Emmy for FX’s “Fosse/Verdon,” ensuring a strong narrative foundation for the movie.
These significant developments were revealed by Labubu creator Kasing Lung and Paul King during the Paris stop of Pop Mart’s “The Monsters” global exhibition tour, which commemorates the brand’s 10th anniversary. It was a decade ago that Kasing Lung first introduced the enchanting world of Labubu through his picture book series, collectively known as “The Monsters Trilogy.” From its literary origins, the franchise rapidly evolved, with the collectible toys, exclusively produced and sold by China-based retailer Pop Mart, transforming into a major pop culture fixation worldwide.
Sony Pictures solidified its commitment to the project by acquiring the screen rights to the Labubu intellectual property in 2025. Kasing Lung will take on an executive producer role for the film, ensuring the creative vision remains true to the original spirit of Labubu. The producing team further includes Paul King, Michael Schaefer, known for his work on “The Martian,” and Wenxin She, recognized for “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” and “Wish Dragon.” Brittany Morrissey will oversee the project on behalf of Sony Pictures, guiding its journey from early development to release.
