Sokoto Under Siege: Deadly Attacks Claim Lives, Second in 48 Hours

The Dan Gulbi community in Tureta Local Government Area of Sokoto State has been subjected to two brutal bandit attacks within a span of just two days, leading to significant loss of life and property. The latest assault occurred on Tuesday morning, when a large contingent of bandits, arriving on motorcycles, stormed the village around 8:00 a.m. and began firing indiscriminately, causing residents to flee for their lives.

Community sources have alleged that the Tuesday attack resulted in the deaths of no fewer than 20 people. In addition to the fatalities, several houses were reportedly set ablaze, and many residents are still missing. A local resident, speaking anonymously, recounted the horror, stating that the attackers struck while people were gathered under sheds and remained in the village for several hours, leaving widespread devastation in their wake. “They came and started shooting at us. People ran in different directions to save their lives,” the source described.

This recent attack comes barely two days after a similar deadly incident on Sunday, where bandits on more than 150 motorcycles targeted the same community. That Sunday assault claimed the lives of 17 people, including Sallah visitors, and resulted in the looting of approximately 20 shops. The recurrence of these violent events has prompted desperate calls from residents to security agencies and relevant authorities for urgent intervention to protect their lives and property.

In response to the escalating crisis, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Sokoto State Command, DSP Ahmad Rufai, confirmed that the command received a distress call from Tureta. He stated that personnel were immediately mobilized to the affected area, and a comprehensive report on the situation from officers on the ground is currently being awaited.
