SNL Mocks Pope's Death and 'Woke' Accusations

This week's "Saturday Night Live" (SNL) featured several segments that addressed current events and pop culture. The Weekend Update segment took aim at the naming of Pope Leo XIV, the first American to hold the position. Co-anchor Colin Jost joked about the new Pope's Chicago roots and the reactions from conservatives, while Michael Che made quips about Donald Trump's plans for tariffs on movies and the reopening of Alcatraz.
Another sketch featured James Austin Johnson as a parody of President Trump, who made controversial implications about Vice President JD Vance's involvement in Pope Francis's death, referencing their meeting shortly before the Pope's passing. The sketch also poked fun at Catholicism, likening it to other American institutions. Vance had met Pope Francis one day before the pontiff’s death and expressed his condolences on X.
In other segments, Walton Goggins of "The White Lotus" made his SNL hosting debut, reuniting with costar Sam Rockwell in a musical sketch about "fully grown-ass men" with "tiny baby feet." Goggins also addressed becoming a sex symbol and brought his mom on stage for Mother’s Day. Aimee Lou Wood, another "White Lotus" costar, did not appear, and previous speculation about a rift between her and Goggins was addressed. Wood had previously criticized SNL's parody of "The White Lotus," finding it "mean and unfunny."
The season 50 finale of SNL will air on May 17, featuring Scarlett Johansson as the guest host and Bad Bunny as the musical guest.
