Skyview's Zakai Owens signs with Dawson men's basketball
GLENDIVE — Billings Skyview's Zakai Owens has signed with the Dawson Community College men's basketball program for next year.
Owens has helped the Falcons to a 14-5 record and the Eastern AA No. 2 seed for the State AA Tournament in Bozeman March 13-15.
“I chose Dawson because I feel as if it is the right fit for me and the community is full of people who support, not just the team, but Glendive as a whole,” Owens was quoted in a Dawson CC news release. “Coach (Joe) Peterson is a great coach and he is someone who can prepare me for the next level. I’m excited to get started on a new chapter.”
The 6-foot-7 forward is averaging 10 points, seven rebounds, three assists and one steal per game while shooting 50% from two-point range and 70% from the free throw line this season per the DCC news release.
“Zakai has a chance to really grow as a basketball player,” Dawson coach Joe Peterson was quoted in the DCC release. “He has size and length, a good shooting touch, and a natural passing ability that is rare. If he can add some strength to his frame, it will really lift his game to new heights. I think he has the right work ethic and mentality to keep developing. That’s what junior college is about … opportunity, development and proving you can play at this level.”
As a junior, Owens helped Skyview to a 11-10 record and was named All-Conference Honorable Mention.
“We are very proud of Zakai and the player and young man he has become," Skyview coach James Bulluck is quoted in a DCC news release announcing the signing. "We are excited to see where the future takes him and wish him the best of luck in his college career. We can’t wait to see what doors basketball opens for him.”
