Sky-High Expansion: Air Tanzania Launches New West African Routes

Air Tanzania has achieved a significant regulatory milestone, officially receiving its Validated Foreign Air Operator Certificate (VFAOC) from the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA). This crucial approval grants the airline the necessary authorization to launch scheduled flights connecting Dar es Salaam and Accra, marking a pivotal moment in its ambitious strategy to expand its operational footprint across the West African region. The acquisition of the Ghanaian VFAOC comes shortly after Air Tanzania inaugurated its service to Lagos, Nigeria, further solidifying its commitment to building a robust pan-African network.
The newly awarded VFAOC is set to unlock substantial commercial and tourism opportunities, establishing a seamless and direct air link between Tanzania and Ghana. This development is particularly vital for Africa's travel sector, as it actively contributes to strengthening intra-African connectivity. Such connections are increasingly critical for the continent's goals of boosting trade, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges, aligning perfectly with major continental initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM).
By integrating Accra into its expanding network, Air Tanzania positions itself to offer travellers and businesses an efficient corridor between two of Africa's most dynamic economies and vibrant tourism destinations. The expected outcome is a notable stimulation of demand for both leisure and business travel. Furthermore, the new route promises to provide enhanced options for cargo and logistics operators seeking more efficient east-west transportation corridors across the continent. This expansion is well-timed, as African airlines are increasingly focused on tapping into underserved regional routes, driven by the continent's rising middle class and a growing demand for direct and reliable air services.
For travel professionals across sub-Saharan Africa, the introduction of direct Dar es Salaam–Accra flights presents fresh opportunities. It enables the development of multi-country itineraries, fosters cross-border partnerships, and promotes regional tourism circuits that effectively showcase the rich diversity of both East and West Africa. Air Tanzania’s successful entry into the Ghanaian market, following its access to Lagos, exemplifies a broader trend among African carriers to leverage regulatory approvals and bilateral agreements to unlock new growth avenues. This strategy reinforces the airline's dedication to becoming a key player in Africa's evolving aviation landscape.
Industry stakeholders are keenly observing how this enhanced connectivity between Dar es Salaam and Accra will influence passenger flows, strengthen business ties, and contribute to the broader vision of a more integrated African airspace. Air Tanzania’s latest achievement serves as a powerful testament to the accelerating momentum behind intra-African air travel and the extensive opportunities it generates for the region’s burgeoning travel and tourism sector.
