Sit-at-Home Alert! IPOB Declares May 30 for Biafra Day Commemoration

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has officially declared a comprehensive sit-at-home order across all towns, villages, and cities within Nigeria's South-East region on May 30. This declaration serves as a solemn tribute to all the brave fallen heroes and heroines who made the ultimate sacrifice in the enduring struggle for Biafra. In a statement released by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, IPOB underscored the profound significance of this day, describing it as a "sacred day of remembrance for Biafran heroes and heroines" who gave their lives in the unwavering defense of their people, dignity, and collective rights.
IPOB has earnestly called upon all Biafrans, both residing at home and those in the diaspora, to observe this "sacred covenant" with the utmost discipline, dignity, and reverence, befitting the immense sacrifices rendered by those who preceded them. Furthermore, the statement extended an appeal to governors across the 13 states of Biafraland, urging them to exhibit moral courage and historical conscience. They are encouraged to fly the Nigerian flag at half-mast on May 30, a gesture intended to honor the millions who perished tragically during the war and in the tumultuous years that ensued. "Such a gesture would not diminish anyone; rather, it would acknowledge the humanity of the dead and affirm that their lives mattered," the statement eloquently articulated.
Emma Powerful emphasized that this observance is far from a mere political ritual. He passionately recounted the generation of 1967–1970, describing them as "men for men — a rare breed forged in fire, deprivation, sacrifice, and impossible odds." This resilient generation, he noted, stood virtually alone against the combined and overwhelming might of military power, yet they etched one of the most astonishing resistance stories in the annals of modern history. They contended with the formidable geopolitical machinery of the United Kingdom, which openly lent diplomatic and strategic backing to Nigeria throughout the conflict. They confronted a barrage of foreign weapons, Soviet arms supplied to Nigeria despite the prevailing Cold War divisions, mercenaries, foreign advisers, devastating blockade warfare, incessant aerial bombardments, cruel starvation policies, and hostile forces meticulously assembled from far beyond Biafra’s geographical borders. Despite these insurmountable challenges, they resolutely stood their ground.
"Hungry, outgunned, isolated, abandoned by the world — but never broken in spirit. What they defended was more than territory. They defended the right of a people to survive. That is why their memory can never die," Powerful asserted. He acknowledged that while the world may move forward, history books might unfortunately diminish their sacrifice to mere footnotes, and governments might prefer an expedient silence, "But for us, remembrance is not politics. It is a sacred obligation." This profound obligation dictates that as long as a single Biafran draws breath anywhere on this earth, the compelling story of those courageous men and women must continue to be narrated, their unparalleled courage must continue to be honored, and their profound suffering must continue to be remembered.
Therefore, every May 30 transcends simple remembrance; it embodies a profound covenant. It represents a solemn vow forged between the living and the dead, ensuring that their monumental sacrifice will never be eradicated by manipulative propaganda, paralyzing fear, or the relentless march of time itself. IPOB calls for the remembrance of the soldiers who fought barefoot with empty stomachs, the ingenious scientists who ingeniously transformed scraps into survival, the resilient mothers who endured the unspeakable pain of burying their children yet found the indomitable strength to persevere, the countless civilians who tragically succumbed to starvation under the harsh blockade, and every single fallen hero whose precious blood watered the very survival of a people.
