Significant Rule Changes Announced for College Basketball

This edition of 6-Banner Sunday, a collaborative effort between The Assembly Call and Inside the Hall, provides a comprehensive overview of the most significant Indiana University basketball news from the past week, along with updates on other IU sports programs. Fans of college basketball received welcome news regarding rule changes, as the NCAA is set to implement a challenge system that more closely mirrors the NBA, aiming to reduce stoppages and improve game flow.

Key rule changes for men’s college basketball, effective next season, include a coach's challenge system. Teams will receive one challenge per game, with an additional challenge awarded if the first is successful. Similar to the NBA, officials will have limited circumstances for initiating reviews, while out-of-bounds calls will now exclusively require a coach's challenge, addressing a frequent cause of late-game delays. An unsuccessful challenge will result in a timeout deduction, requiring teams to have a timeout available to initiate a review.

In NBA Finals action, former Hoosier Thomas Bryant and the Indiana Pacers found themselves in a tight series, tied 2-2 with the Oklahoma City Thunder. Despite playing a critical backup center role, Bryant has seen minimal court time since the first game. The Pacers, making their first Finals appearance since 2000, are vying for the state’s first major basketball title since IU's 1987 championship. Game five was scheduled for the following day as the series continued.

Inside the Hall’s ongoing series, 'Big Ten offseason at a glance,' continued its detailed breakdown of various Big Ten squads, with recent spotlights on Iowa, Wisconsin, USC, Ohio State, and Michigan State. Recruiting efforts for the Hoosiers also saw significant activity, including the release of highlight videos for targets such as Bruce Branch III, Malachi Jordan, Ryan Hampton, Kohl Rosario, and Deron Rippey Jr. Additionally, ITH published its 2026 prospect big board, reported on a potential future big man's campus visit, and noted ESPN's ranking of IU's incoming transfer portal class at seventh nationally.

The Back Home Network featured multiple shows this week, including Crimson Cast and Dribble Drive. Furthermore, head coach Darian DeVries made a significant appearance on Jon Rothstein’s nationally recognized podcast. In other IU sports news, baseball announced summer league assignments for its players and honored several athletes for their season performances. Softball's star player received national recognition, while the track and field team competed at the NCAA Championships. Former IU swimming star Lily King and other athletes were competing at the World Aquatic Championships. The field hockey program had a player set to compete for the U21 Spanish national team, and rowing highlighted a potential athlete of the year. Academic success was also celebrated, with 123 Hoosiers recognized for their achievements. Additionally, a previously reported matchup was confirmed: Indiana will play Louisville in Indy on December 6 at 2 p.m. ET, airing on CBS.
