Shockwaves in NBA: LaMelo Ball Eyed in Hornets Trade Talks!
The Charlotte Hornets are reportedly in advanced trade talks for star point guard LaMelo Ball, despite his happiness with the team and eligibility for a major contract extension. Ball led the Hornets to a significant turnaround season, reaching the play-in tournament with strong contributions, though their playoff hopes ended with a loss to the Orlando Magic.
The Charlotte Hornets are reportedly engaged in significant trade discussions with multiple teams actively pursuing their star point guard, LaMelo Ball. Sources close to ESPN's Shams Charania indicate that talks have intensified, with the Hornets receiving aggressive offers for the talented player. If Charlotte's demands are met, a potential trade could materialize within the next 24 to 48 hours, according to Wednesday night reports.
Despite the trade speculation, Ball has expressed contentment in Charlotte, and both parties are described as being in a positive relationship. Ball is currently under contract for three more years and is eligible to sign a lucrative two-year, $119.2 million extension starting July 6. His recent performance saw him average 20.1 points, 7.1 assists, and 4.8 rebounds, shooting 36.8% from beyond the arc over 72 regular-season games. This marked his highest game total since his second season in 2021-22, as he had previously been limited to just 105 games from 2022-23 to 2024-25 due to various injuries.
Under Ball's leadership, the Hornets experienced a remarkable turnaround last season, achieving 44 wins compared to just 19 the year prior. This significant improvement brought them to the brink of the playoffs, falling one play-in game short of ending a postseason drought that has lasted since 2016. Key factors in their resurgence included the improved health of LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller, alongside the impactful arrival of rookie Kon Knueppel. Miller, the second overall pick in the 2023 draft, contributed significantly with team-high averages of 20.2 points and 4.9 rebounds across 65 games. Knueppel, meanwhile, made an immediate impact, finishing second in Rookie of the Year voting to Dallas' Cooper Flagg and becoming the first rookie to lead the league in three-pointers made.
The Hornets' postseason push included a thrilling victory against the Miami Heat, securing a 127-126 overtime win in the first Eastern Conference play-in game. LaMelo Ball was instrumental, sinking a decisive layup with 4.7 seconds remaining. However, the game was not without controversy for Ball, who was subsequently fined $35,000 for "unnecessary and reckless contact" with Heat center Bam Adebayo, stemming from Ball swiping at Adebayo's foot. He also incurred a $25,000 fine for using profane language during a post-game TV interview, for which he later offered an apology to Adebayo.
The Hornets' season ultimately concluded with a 121-90 defeat to the Orlando Magic in the subsequent play-in game. Despite the season's end, Ball expressed enjoyment of the team chemistry during their impressive run. In a late March interview with ESPN, he acknowledged that making the postseason was a positive step but clarified his larger ambitions: "It's definitely what you want," Ball said of making the playoffs. "But it's not what I'm satisfied with. You know what I'm saying? We try to win some championships for sure."
